Afternoon everyone, I am new to the board and pretty much smokeless muzzleloading.
been searching around for for a person to use to convert my 700 ultimate to use smokeless powder and think I have decided to use the Hankins system and Jeff to do so. I have sent him a couple of emails about pricing and am waiting on a reply.
Just wanted to to ask the ones that have had one done, how they like theirs and some ideas on what needs to be done, to be able to shoot smokeless from them. Kinda new, I do have an Encore build but that's it.
does Jeff use the same bolt (I seen some on Dougs talking about a $300 bolt) and just make a 308 Module or?
what kind of stock did you use or did you use the original? If so, do you like it?
guess that's enough questions to get started.

You can use your action/stock and trigger if you want, Jeff will supply barrel/plug and priming modules, his system works very well as many here can attest too. You will also need a hand priming tool and an adjustable sizing die to size bullets. Expect 1/2 moa accuracy or better with good bullets

Jeff has barreled several for me and all have been very well done, he is doing another right now. Im pretty picky about my guns and if he did sub par work it would have been one and done. His system works great and he builds some very accurate guns.
the modules seal 100% and are very easy to re prime, what's not to like?
this, coming from a guy that shoots 209 systems as well. I can tell you all you want to know about both systems, I likely have more experience with both systems than anyone here, straight questions? you will get straight answers..

Thanks Hillbill, that's more of what I was looking for as far as his primer system. Can't say I care for specialized modules but if they seal 100%, I can get behind them. are the stocks on these good quality to use or is others swapping them. I bought the laminate one and like the look but have always preferred a thumb hole stock. Unless the original is kinda cheap, I may stick with it until next year. (Just because I a, spending so much, now! do the stocks need to be bedded? does Jeff use original bolt and just make a module to fit it? I am assuming 400yds will be doable as long as I do my part? About the longest shot I would ever have, where I hunt.

Like Hillbill said, Jeff Hankins does great work. He is in the process of building me another smokeless muzzleloader. I have one that he built me in 2014 and it shoots very well. Hillbill and Jeff will both give you honest answers to your questions.

Yes you can use the factory bolt and it will use standard bolt face priming modules. The factory laminated stock will work fine, but you might want pillars to be added as a minimum. I would go with what Jeff recommends for aditional stock work since you are not certain if it will be replaced later.

If you favor thumbhole stock's. I would recomend you evaluate the price of adding pillars nd bedding in the factory stock... Will you be happy with it...or wish you would have just went ahead and done it to a thumbhole anyway. Drop

Thanks Drop, that's kind of what I was thinking to. Thought about just adding pillars now and make sure I like it and if not, I can change stocks next year after I recoup from the exspense.

Yes your stock will need to be pillared and bedded, your push pin removed from the bolt but you can use everything, even the trigger. Earnie the gunsmith offers spring packages for the X Mark Pro that makes it a pretty good trigger if you can take the set screw in the trigger shoe, I can't, I hate the way it feels personally but otherwise it makes a good trigger. overall its makes a very good platform for a very nice SML, IMO the best and cheapest way to get into a 700 with a decent stock. Im looking into one myself with the M-40 stock, I have used upwards of 50 M-40s in the last few years and for the money in a moderately heavy build it works very well.

Not sure about the trigger. I have an old 60's model 700 in 222 that is pretty much my experience with the platform. I just bought the Ultimate and am waiting on delivery but have been reading reviews and have been eyeing a Timney 510 or a Jewell but wanted to wait and see what I thought about the Xmark first.

hard to go wrong with either trigger, the Timney is lower cost and will make a very good hunting trigger, If you do a lot of bench work the Jewell is hard to beat. out of the box the X Mark will not impress you at all but for a small sum it can be made into a decent trigger..

The laminated wood stick that come with the ultimate is a pretty nice piece of wood.. I think they are made by Boyd's but not 100% sure.. The M40 is made by Bell & Carlson and is a good choice fro riding the bags but to me it's not as friendly for a hunting stock. If I were going to use the laminated wood stock I would pillar and bed it. The B&C stock could get by with a skim coat of bedding. The factory trigger does leave you wanting more and the timney and Jewell will fit the bill. The ultimate ml is a good place to start and you will have a tack driver when finished.

I would highly suspect misfires result from a leaky ignition system no matter how small-not the powders fault.

I like the way you talk, Can not wait to get mine back from you. Jeff is converting my ultimate firearms BP EXPRESS which was made by ultimate firearms out of Okemos Michigan. I already own one of jeffs complete builds and when I got it from Jeff my ultimate was not even close to being acceptable in my eyes anymore. The ultimate is a NICE gun but Hankins guns are UNBELIEVABLE. You will not be disappointed in your choice if you have Jeff do the conversion.
