I went to the range this afternoon after eating lunch with the wife and kids and had time to shoot 8 groups. 4 were at 100 yards and 4 at 200 yards. At this range session I was experimenting with the 325 Match Hunters smooth formed and also the 275 Ballistic Extremes smooth formed, both with IMR 4198 Powder. Rain would not allow me to chronograph when I was shooting at 100, but after walking the targets out to the 200 yard target the rain let up and I broke out the Chrony. Temp was bouncing between 78 and 80 with absolutely zero wind, but very high humidity. The 71 gr charge of IMR 4198 averaged 2781 with the 325 Match Hunter and no wad. The 72 gr charge of IMR 4198 with a wad averaged 2789. Only 8 fps more with 1 grain of powder and a wad. I gather from this that with faster burning powder with a heavy bullet, wads do not help to increase velocity a whole lot. I was expecting a totally different result. Maybe with slower burning powders there is a noticeable difference. I'll try that scenario out soon with IMR 3031 and the 325 Match Hunter. These groups were shot with no forearm hold. I typically hold the forearm while shooting this rifle. Just experimenting a little with shooting form too. I called this thread the good, the bad and the ugly because I shot a couple of really good groups and a couple that looks like they were shot with OOO Buck. Anyhow, here they are, Kyle

kyle- I had a similar day-it seems to me that 327's in high temps are very sensitive,i had a .712@ 200yds & a couple of other group's around 2''//also ran a little h322..speeds were excellent & groups were what I call above avg good but probably not take any wood home @ kentucky shoot//but maybe a cooler weather hunting load/jmho

things will get interesting from now on out til season starts, lots of testing to do and deer to put down, Im getting excited..
I hope to try some different powders and 322 might be one of them, Im in search of a good temp stable load with the MHs for field work..
.712 @ 200 is pretty darn good, Kyle has some good ones as well, guess I might as well settle for the middle of the pack at the shoot..

Did the new brake do the trick? imo the brake was part of it, I did have a spot where the freefloated barrel was touching at times & maybe scope sliding in rings. this barrel seems to not want 275be's say under 2"@ 200-don't know why.
just hope my bullets show from parker in time.
good shootin kyle!

I'm shooting a Hankins Smokeless Muzzleloader that Jeff Hankins of Hankins Custom Rifles built for me in 2014. I have to say this is the best shooting gun that I have when I am doing everything right. Absolutely nothing bad to say about the gun at all. I would recommend Jeff to anyone looking to have a smokeless muzzleloader built, and who knows I might add another to my collection one day. You can see more about my rifle on this link: hanksmessageboard.freeforums.net/thread/32/hankins-smokeless-muzzleloader

Your "ugly" groups still amount to very dead deer! Dern good trigger-work out of a great shootin' rifle.

You can't hardly go wrong with those MZ's.

Nice shooting! Your ES's are very low; which is great. Your second 200 yard group with the wad appeared to just a tad higher in average velocity but three shots is not enough to confirm the difference. Richard

Kyle do you think the MH groups are not as good as the BE because of the thicker jacket?

schunter, The BE's with their thinner jackets are less finicky than thicker jacketed bullets in my opinion smooth sized. I plan to size some more Match Hunters to fit the bore even tighter and see how those work. It's really apples to oranges, the BE's I'm shooting are 275 and the Match Hunters are 325 (327 actually ). I was also trying a different hold on the rifle and did not change that hold for all 8 groups. I know the BE's work, just playing around with a higher BC and heavier bullet in case the cloning of TRex is successful one day. Kyle
