We’ll I usually use Winchester large magnum primers but found some cci large rifle 200 primers on the shelf today so I bought a box of 1000 for $80, does anybody use these in the scout conversions? I’ve read the magnum primer isn’t needed unless using large loads in a bolt gun. Thanks for the comments in advance!

I do know in a cartridge rifle that anything over 65 to 70 grains it is suggested that a magnum primer be used, so in a SML I would "imagine" it to be about the same. In my 44 cal CVA Hunter SML that Hank did for me I am just using Remington LG Rifle Primers and they do just fine with 59 grains of powder. Every gun is different and every primer brand is different so you just may have to try them to find out if they work for you. I am sure those on here with much more experience than I with the SML will chime in so wait and see what they say.

If they don't make it go "bang", 5 grains of primer powder under the main charge (reduced) should do the trick.

I would say it will go bang and only about 10fps difference if any.

That’s what I was hoping for! Have a bunch of friends that have tons of primers but getting tired of asking them for them , and they have been absolute on the shelf, guy at scheels told me it’s the 1st ones he’s seen in a year and they were just putting them on the shelf, central iowa

If it's too cold and you only have large rifle primers it might be time to switch to the direct ignition system.. that will warm up the charge! Over the years I have used both of the large rifle and large rifle magnum primers and at best, there's only about 10 ft a second difference Or, as Dennis mentioned just put a few grains of n110 under your charge and drop two grains off your main load ! For the extreme cold weather you boys get up north, I would just duplex to be on the safe side.
