I see there are different model numbers for them...does it matter?

I have shot about all the magnum and standard large rifle primers ( Federal, Winchester Remington, CCI and Wolf) and didn't see a whole lot of difference in all of them. Maybe 10 fps more velocity with magnums, but that's about it?

Thats not much difference! I was just curious as I see magnum primers listed such as CCI #250...Federal #215 ect...I wondered what the number assigned to them meant? And if it is even necessary for the HIS system? I have several thousand standard LRP..

I would just use them. I also shot those CCI mil/spec primers ( they come in a white and black box?..They also shot similar.

Agree with Richards statement on primers but have found closer to 20 fps increase on speeds with magnums. Magnums were originally made for ignition issues in arctic cold temps. A magnum might make a difference in really cold temps. I’ve used standard large rifle in temps down to zero with great results. I actually prefer large rifle over magnum in my muzzleloaders (lower speed deviation) and have found the same to be true in my magnum rifles. I think primers are overrated (benchrest CCI and Federal). I bought into the benchrest primer craze for quite a while and switched to regular large rifle when I was forced too. All the brands seem to work really well. Even some old Alco primers that were 50 years old worked well. Others will tell you the benchrest have better quality control and the weights are more consistent and that statement will also be true. I don’t think it will matter at all with a muzzleloader -lMO

For what it is worth, I've been using standard LRPs in my Hankins built Encore SML. Performance has been very consistent shot to shot. I really doubt match grade or magnum would be beneficial to me.

They are a large rifle primer that’s similar to a hot Winchester large rifle primer. They are usually available somewhere when others aren’t. They will work great ! Best wishes.

They sell primers every day on Gunbroker. You’ll pay scalper prices there, but if you need them bad enough, they’re available. I just paid nearly $400 for 1000 Federal Gold Match Magnums by the time I paid shipping and hazmat fees. There are cheaper options, but that’s what I use in my RUM’s. Also lost a lot of bid wars before I finally “won”, and oddly enough I got them cheaper than the bids I lost.
