Is there a minumum powder charge for this set up?

Yes n no, depends on the powder you want to use. Too little n you starve it, too much it would blow. I assume you have a .45, H4198 you could shoot 45 gr n go up to maybe 65. I don't own one so i am just putting this out as an example. Also it depends on the bullet weight. VV110 you could start at 30 gr n ease on up to 38 maybe, also it workss along with the bullet weight your going to use

There is a minimum if you have HIS in a Break Action 45-70 conversion! The powder chamber (remaining portion of the 45-70 chamber not occupied by the HIS plug) must be filled so that the sabot or bullet remains in the rifled portion of the barrel. I'm pretty sure that 30 grains, likely 38 grains as well, of N110 will NOT fill the chamber.

Is there a minumum powder charge for this set up? Yes there is a minimum charge as all these conversions have a bit of a chamber. IE the remainder of the 45-70ca Se. With 4198 I would start at a min. Of 55gr but would suggest finding out for sure how much of a chamber your rifle has. It isn't that hard to figure out and will save you headaches down the road

There’s definitely a minimum.

My son got the break action 45-70 conversion with the HIS and we are gathering up componets to get it set up and I stumbled across a thread on here about making sure the powder charge is enough to fill the chamber and I was wondering what enough was? I have only shot Sav./Pacs that I put together in the past and this was never a issue...we have N120 on hand..

I'm getting a Scout built. I will take my borescope and make measurements from breach face and chamber end to muzzle. I will be shooting 37 gr of N110 that I'll put in barrel under a veggie wad, then take more measurements of what I see. I want empirical data not calculations.

A flashlight, bullet, tape, ram rod and something to remove the breech plug.

Tar12 you may get by with that small amount of powder with a longer plug. The asg plug is longer than Hanks plugs and I believe Hank has any style you want. Others have gone this route

My black blued scout is good with 55 gr of 4198. On a spent his primer, load your gun with a tight bullet. Pull plug and dump out powder. Look to see the bottom of your bullet. Easy to do and only cost a powder charge or two.

I believe buckstuds response is a sure fire method to determine where your loaded bullet ends up regardless of what powder or plug is used. Of course the OP indicated, I believe, that he has the HIS plug. If it is HIS there is no need to use a spent primer, don't put any module in, not needed. There is a lot of talk about the longer plug allowing small charges but I don't have any definitive idea how much. The longer ASG plug holds powder all along most of that length and, if I remember correctly, Hankins version of the longer ASG plug has a larger internal capacity than the original ASG plug and likely may hold more powder inside the plug. Until someone sorts it all out I think what buckstuds stated is the way to check.

I removed the plug my CVA Hankins conversation. Picture is just a empty barrel but you can see the rifling. I pushed a bullet down the barrel and the bullet is still in the rifling but just above the powder chamber. Here’s a picture with the bullet inside the power chamber. Not what you want. This will not be good for the barrel or the shooter. The last picture is how is mark my ram rod with tape. I make sure I never go below this mark. As posted above you can start low and work your way up or you can start high and work your way down and never let the mark go inside the brake. Hope this helps. Once you know what the minimum is, write it down and never go below that number.

If your barrel is machined for the plug already I don't think it can be changed
