I have CVA Hunter 45-70 that is converted with HIS breech plug that I right now shoot with sabots My load right now 55 gr of H4198 under the 195 gr Barnes in light blue sabots I'm sure with this load my bullet/sabot is in the rifling. To be safe I also have it on top of wool card to move it further How do you measure where it is safe to have bullet sit? At some point I'd like to have a light load for off hand shooting practicing. My conversion does not have a true "powder chamber" but still I don't want my bullet end up in freebore Thanks!

I'm different than most on the board. I went the totally opposite direction as most. I went with the longer Hankins DI plug when I had my black blue Scout 45-70 converted. It takes most of the chamber out. I only shoot light saboted loads. 225gr and below bullets with N110.

I read it and since it's 1 A.M I will give up for now and will have to re-read it later. My brain is not cooperating! Thanks for replies!

I'd put my rigid Teslong borescope down the muzzle and look for end of chamber, make a mark on the rod and measure . Then I could load a powder charge under a veggie wad and measure again with the borescope or just look with the borescope if I was out of the chamber.
