Just wanted to say that I had posted a question regarding bullet performance last year, after shooting a doe at around 100yds. I found her, but the bullet didn't exit - leaving very little blood trail.
Well, I trusted the advice of many of you on this message board and stuck with the Pittman 278Gr bullets, wool patch and 58gr of 4198- AND GLAD I DID.
Took 2 bucks this year with my conversion, both around 100yds here in the woods of VA - neither took a step.
2 members of my hunt club have now bought a 45-70 Scout and getting ready for a conversion as well. I tell everyone that they can't go wrong with Jeff's work!
Appreciate you all sharing your experiences with me - new to SML.

Yep. Accuracy is essentially same hole at 100yds. Here where we hunt in the mountains, that normally does the job. That being said, I would be confident shooting well out to 200-250yds once I feel confident with the ballistics.

your using 28 grains of 4198 powder? [b I also run the bullet thru the swage tool 3times - found I get better consistency with how the bullet seats in the barrel. That, plus the load size, were things I picked up on from reading other posts on this board. Seems to have worked well for me, so thought I would share it with others.....

One more time just to be sure, you’re shooting 28 grains of 4198?

Seems a little light on the load for using 4198 and a 278gr. IMO.

There has been warnings and much discussion on here about not using less grains then the chamber will hold at a minimum. My Hankins' Scout is around 50 grs. with the HIS as I believe others are....not sure, but just saying. If you drive the bullet down past the rifling it will cause flame erosion of the lower rifling. The DI system can have modified chamber areas.....do you have one of these? If so, inquiring minds want to know more....muzzle velocity would be about 1400 to 1500 fps or so?

I also have a CVA Scout conversation that Jeff did. Super happy with his work. I’m using a DI plug with IMR 4227. My minimum load I can shoot is 53 grains.
28 grains of 4198 will put your bullet in the powder chamber with a HIS or a DI plug.
What plug are you use?

Can someone explain how 28 grn of 4198 works and the bullet doesn’t tumble?? I’ve had kids shoot blackpowder rifles with 50grn and have killed deer at 200yrds but never have tried this low of a charge in a smokeless.

I am using 58gr of 4198 - must have had the brain disengaged, and truly apologize for the confusion. Good thing the Misinformation Board didn't come and cancel me...

Plus thank you for the MV of that load. I shoot 56 grs. and had calculated by subtraction and addition from other loads people had listed that mine was between 2400 and 2500. Have an old Chrony but have3 no place to shoot as of yet.
