That would be more than adequate on a doe of that size at that range. Glad to see you got that first deer. Next up for you a buck I am sure. I have a rifle with a .257 bullet but it is a 25-06 and even that is a bit overbore.

Yes it is a little bit much but my late grandfather loved the 257 never got to meet him So I got it in memory of him

Congratulations on your first deer, very exciting. And the emotions and pride of doing it with your grandfather's favorite rifle will be your memory for life. Enjoy the bounty in future meals.
The closest I get to your 257 Weatherby is a 25 WSSM, sweet little gun, too bad it went extinct a long time ago. I hand-load like you so I'm good as long as I have brass.

Good job on your first deer! Thats always a BIG moment in a hunter's life. Very cool, happy to hear about your success. Love the 25s... I use a 25-06, but it's an underrated caliber. Since you're reloading, you may want to try out some 115 or 120 grain partitions. Maybe a 110 grain accubond. They'll hold up a little better at higher velocities. You don't want the whole thing in burger before it's gutted. LOL

Congratulations, and as GD said you should try going to the heavier bullets that's where it really has the advantage on the 25-06. I have a 257 Roberts AI, 25-06 and a 257wby and I use 117sst in all three. I like speed as much as anybody but the 100 gr were intending for the non AI Roberts I believe. Now if you're going after pronghorn out west then you have the rocket launcher already figured out.

I still remember that thrill of the first for me 40?? something years ago. I still get excited while in the stand be it a buck or doe even if I am not planning on shooting the animal. If I ever lose the excitement of the hunt I will hang it up. Stay exited!!!
