I will be ordering some 300 grain Fury ST2’s after Christmas. I have always went with 250 or 275 grain bullets but want to try 300’s. I have a Rem 700 build with one of Jeff’s .45 Remage barrels with a brake and HIS ignition. I understand the max load with the 275’s is 65 grains of H4198. What would the max SAFE load be for a 300 grain bullet. I have both H4198 and N120 for powders to work with.
Thank you

Thank you When my conversion was shipped to me , a ASG build , its owner said 60 gr H4198 for the 300gr smooth sized . He also told me at 62gr the 300gr Aeromax Pittman would shoot into a hole at 100 yds . He wasnt kidding !!! In my 45 it Does shoot better than any other load out to 400yds (within palm size) which is all my distance practice range allows (a farm lane with thick woods backstop) . Our rifles are very similar includeing the laminated stocks colors. Yours has Hankins bp and i have ASG . Brux 1 in 20 , 45 barrels 26 in. , Remage . Modual LR ignition .

Sideshow- yes our builds are almost twins. Have you shot that load over a chrono?

From what ive come to understand the ASG plug is Not as good as the Hankins HIS System . I have both makers plugs to compare and truthfully i agree the pure Hankins design IS better(40 cal) . I think that gets reflected in velocity achieved ?? Guys with HIS get better velocity than i do on here by a little but noticeable bit . . I got 2547 avg from 62gr of H4198 and Federal LR Magnum primers when i tested that 300 gr load during January for velocity . In Michigan so it was Cold !!! It sped up in warmer weather but Jeffs was still faster as ive read here with others velocities . This bp also seems to give speeds not quite up to par with 275 gr loads of 65gr H4198 as well . Ive used wool wads , veggie wads , and poly wads too . Pittmans and Furys . Everything shot good but i know my velocity i thought couldve/shouldve been better ?? The 275s also shot best at 68gr H4198 but this Does Make Me Nervous honestly !!! 2745 Avg seems a bit slow there too although the Brux did its job on accuracy . 225 pittmans and 240 OT furys also shot good in HLB Sabots with both H4198 and N120 . I didnt bring my Chrony that day in notes, Sorry !!! Oh and my bp was clean as a whistle too so it wasnt that i dont think as reason for less velocity . I think its simply that plug . One day i hope Jeffs replacement fixes this . Ive spoke alot about cold temps but thats really what matters most to me is hunting season conditions . .

I am surprised to hear that 68gr did the best with the 275gr... at 66gr of imr 4198 mine stacks the 275 accumax at about 2650 fps

Farmerboy78 i dunno that velocity was a summer session with 68gr i dont get even close to 2650 in the summer with a 66gr load !!! I think this plug is about 50 fps slow honestly . i cant REALLY Complain , this 45 was a gift ?? I keep a eye on velocity but accuracy is what i really pay attention to . Thats what the gun likes i figure and it does deliver that .

Guys to be Completely Fair i think it maybe good to say something about my Chrony chronograph . While i went to a public range one day a man was there with his new Labradar . Nice Toy !!! When we walked down to get targets after volleys i mentioned i liked his and that id shot mine on accident here . This guy offered me his old Chrony for $25 and i bought it . Its "well used" before i ever had this thing lol . But $25 got me back in bussiness . It doesnt always read , read accurately , or can seem to work fine . Its what i have for now . If youve seen differences in your numbers id be more inclined to believe your figures ,Consistantly Speaking , than mine . I believe this old machine to be in the ballpark much of the time but not all the time ?? Ultimately i dont Really know how exact it is when it does seem to be ok . I thought about it and figured you needed to hear this ?? I dont want to mess you up . Accuracy of group that i can trust , its the speeds i "hope" are correct .

FYI on the chrony and most other similar. New batteries are in order and remove when not using. A translucent shield (I use a garbage bag and tape it to the vertical rods via an oversized box) that’s a little oversized really helps with keeping the light constant for precise readings. Direct sun on 1 eye and not the other will mess up the readings or give errors for example. The last and best thing will be to put a bubble level on the unit. I glued 1 into place. Leveling the chrony to the angle you’re shooting (I try to shoot at flat spots) will make the biggest difference for readings that you can trust and put in your notes. I use a labradar for 99% of my shooting now - but keep the chrony available if I ever need it for a second witness. It’s very reliable when set up correctly. It will give readings of less than 10 fps of my labradar. Knowing your speeds and zeros in hot and cold weather is vital. They can both change and sometimes significantly. Knowledge is power for making the shot or missing wishing you would have known. I like what your doing. I also like both ignition systems but prefer the HIS. It holds up really well when pushed higher for pressure. I use direct ignition in my recent .45 and .40. It seems to do a little better in really cold weather-but it’s also a lot slower for a reload when your fingers are frozen -LOL I’ve put several remage together for Remington and savages. I won’t comment on load data as I push them a little faster by 100 fps than most. I haven’t bulged a barrel yet but know a few that have so be careful.
