sureshotJeffSureshot, Thanks for sharing your story, brother. Hope your recovery is swift and a full 100%! Jeff, thank you for the “visual reminder!” It’s pictures and stories like these that send chills down my back. I love these rifles and what they can do, but they COMMAND respect and FULL ATTENTION at all times.

Thank you for sharing your misfortune as a stark reminder of the outcome of a slight lapse in attention. I wish for you a full recovery.

Sureshot, hope your hand and fingers continue to heal and you are blessed with a complete recovery. Thank you for swallowing your pride and offering all of us a powerful safety reminder...........along with Jeff's gruesome and shocking photo of another unfortunate shooter. At the last Kentucky Challenge I double loaded 105 grains of 4895 and 328 Pittman in my heavy Hankins SPML-45, all it took was someone interrupting my loading routine by asking a question. Thank goodness I didn't touch it off! My required ram-rod witness mark saved my ass and the day. Igniting 210 grains of 4895 with two 328 grain bullets mixed in wouldn't have ended well for me and all those around me. I'm now the proud owner of a Hankins emergency bullet-puller kit.

You are so lucky man. And yes, it can happen to anyone that has a momentary lapse of concentration. Glad you are healing.

On my scout I always look through the breech pointed at light to see if I can see through the barrel, I then always check my mark on my ramrod 3 times before firing , never hurts to measure twice and cut once!

shoop, thats a great advise to me and to all!! and with the bolt guns if not MARKED load with RED DUCT TAPE as I failed to do, over the muzzle, and a ramrod check, I will pull the bolt back or out and shine a light into the breech area and look for light. Also if in doubt after both light and ramrod check, a primer discharged thru the gun is a cheap check that will also verify, Even now with all my guns all will be checked for BORE obstructions be fore use......

Thanks for Sharing Sureshot. I like Hillbill and shoop's idea of looking for light in the barrel at the start of any loading session. We used to do that back when we were shooting crap for powder in cheapo muzzleloaders in the late 80s early 90s. Not so much to avoid double-loading but to prevent crap from plugging the breach hole. We used pieces of wire to poke stuff out. When is the last time you needed a wire poker with smokeless powder? We would say "got hole" to each other when beginning to load. I still do that just to make sure there is nothing in the barrel -- perhaps mud, marbles, rats, birds, geckos etc. You can see through your whole barrel using even the smallest breach plug hole if you put it up to the sun or bright flashlight. Human memory is a funny thing. Short term memory of an action can disappear in a moment for anyone, not just us older folk. That is why Hillbill keeps forgetting where he put his phone. That is why safeguards are critical.

Even in centerfire benchrest matches they instigated a new rule for range command two years ago: Ready on the right....Ready on the left....CHECK YOURE BORE......insert your bolt....COMMENCE FIRE!

Getting distracted is a recipe for disaster. After over 50 years of practicing gun safety, I got distracted dismantling 9mm pistol and shot off my trigger finger. Haven't been "too proud" to mention it, but very ashamed. Luckily, the middle finger suffices quite well for shooting rifles, but have to shoot with the other hand with pistols.

Well I made one of our Rifle club meetings since my (BIG MISTAKE) and shared my thoughts on my failure not that it was required, just to inform. Let me say that the many that were there like you here on the board were very thankful for my sharing, and the attention from those there were like (Deer eyes in the headlights!) I am improving very well will start OT in the coming days, I have been up a couple treestands and on my first day harvested an 8 point buck, with my 08, just glad to be out,,,,,,

I couldn't just click on the "Like" button, because I'm not liking hearing about your accident. I'm approaching pucker-factor 6 or 7 just thinking to myself about what you suffered. Great job improvising, adapting and overcoming.

At the expense of your emotions, you are providing a great service to all of us fellow shooters, thank you. Just keep in mind that your story has and will continue to help others prevent loading accidents and firearm accidents in general. Now get after you therapy work, it's gonna be tough, but can't keep a good man down. Best of luck.
