I just picked up a older cva apex converted by slufoot. Haven't got it out to shoot yet but was trying some primer fit in the savage plug and noticed it was really sticky and hard to even get the primers out I can only imagine it will get worse when shot. I also saw they make new replacement savage plugs would I be able to replace it with a newer plug with a bushing instead of vent liners? Thanks for the help

Thanks for the help I would call Hank at his shop and see what he can do to help with this. If it were mine I would have it changed to a DI system. I had an Apex with DI and now have a Scout with DI and in a break action it is the way to go IMO.

I think a lot depends on how much you want to shoot it and how much you want to spend on the upgrade. Dennis’s suggestion is for the ideal. A bushing Sav plug would work well also. A size “C” drill bit would ideally open the Sav BP primer pocket. The primer swells at the shot then contracts. It’d be easy to finger extract then. I did that to all of my Sav BPs as well as other BPs using 209s.
The Apex is so nice that DI would make it as good as it could get. IE, worth the investment.

Slufoot took the shell ejector off the guns when he converted them. Not sure why he never returned them with the converted barrel. I can only imagine he has a shoe box full of them. LOL
I use a golf divot tool to pry them out after the shot occurs. Something with a V shape to grab the rim of the primer and wedge them out. Drilling them out with a C sized bit made mine sit further in the breech plug and made them even harder to get back out.
I am still shooting and 8/48 or 10/48 load of SR4759/4198 and it's a great gun!!!
