Call me an idiot but I have to ask if anyone has had this idea and then promptly talked themselves out of it. Load powder, wad and bullet like normal. Then insert an additional wad (maybe poly or wool) on top of the bullet to ensure it stays seated during a long day of hiking around rough terrain and brush. I know I can just take my ram rod and do a quick check whenever I get to my hunting spot. But there are many times I am slowly slipping into a spot and kick up a nice deer that may give me a split second for a shot. What say you? I have thick skin so lay it on me.

I think I saw that once in a Wylie Coyote vs Roadrunner cartoon.

Full disclosure: I’m 100% nowhere close to the most experienced guy in this forum (haven’t even finished my build yet).
But that being said I cannot imagine the “wad in front” retaining a smidge of accuracy. The bullet to front-wad interaction would likely be so unpredictable. Recalling that sabot-less bullets are more accurate because they remove the slight inconsistency of how a sabot will disengage from a bullet. And the importance of muzzle crowning to ensure that propellant gasses disperse symmetrically so they don’t slightly push unevenly in a bullet as it exists the muzzle. So with those well-known facts in mind, a chunk of wool in front of a bullet that has to push it out of the way, and the wad acting as a sail until then, possibly even getting speared and stuck by the bullet… I just cannot help but think that would turn any gun’s accuracy into a “minute of broadside barn at 20yd” shooter.

That said this is a safe place to talk and share ideas, so I hope my comment above doesn’t come across harshly. Kudos to you for coming up with an idea and sharing it around for discussion. It’s what makes this place great :-)

I would say why add a barrel obstruction?
Do you reload immediately after shooting or are you loading on a fouled barrel?
Crusty fouling can tighten up a bore. After shooting load the gun let it sit for a day. Then remove breach plug dump powder and see how “easily” the projectile moves towards muzzle. It my lay your mid to rest on projectile movement.

In 17 years of shooting smokeless guns I have never had a bullet come off the powder, not saying it can't happen but with any seating resistance at all It should stay put. now to seal the bore I either use a balloon or finger from a latex glove, serves as a loaded barrel reminder and keeps the moisture out.
I agree with the others, nothing in front of the bullet, could make for a bad day.

I've always just run a bore snake through after a range session, but on your advice tested this and sure enough that sucker is way tighter than if I had run a snake through it. even did some simulated brush testing and jarred the rifle a little and no bullet movement. thx yall for the patient advice. I think ill avoid this Wylie coyote move.
