I have previously shot a 50 cal smokeless gun with sabots. I bought a 45 cal savage prefit last winter and finally got it all put together. I know a lot of people are shooting with no sabots but I am not quite ready to do that yet. Will shoot a harvester blue sabot and got some 4198. The only 40 cal bullets I could get were the hornady xtp and sst. Just wondering if there are any other readily available 40 cal bullets that would work out of a muzzleloader? Also, what would be a starting and Max load with 4198. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

First do you have a brake on your barrel? If so you'll want to proceed with caution concerning the use of sabots. You might want to visit Kyle Pittmans website and review his line of bullets and his advice concerning use of sabots and muzzle brakes. Kyle makes extremely accurate and high B.C. bullets for the smokeless muzzleloader.
In my opinion you'd do well to consider the.45 cal. 275 Accumax with 65 gr. of 4198 and a wool wad. This is assuming you have either Hankin's or Post's sizing die for bullet fit. The .45 has been well researched and performs well without a plastic wad.

The coyotemaster gave you good advice! Sabots can be your weak link, especially in warm conditions. All in all, unless you are shooting light weight bullets at low velocities (where the bullet will not obturate), sabotless is the best route in smokeless muzzleloading.

Better yet for hunting applications would be the 278 hard core. JMO
While the sabots are the weak link in these guns IF you don't have a sizing die don't be afraid to use them with the 225 .40 cal bullet, several do and with very good accuracy, the BC on the little .40 cal bullet will be in the same ballpark if not better.
56-58 grains of 4198 will get you in the game with that bullet/sabot combo.
Like has been stated barrel heat will kill sabots but with patience they work well, not advocating their use, just telling you they work if you don't have or don't want to spend the bucks on a die.

The classic load that our hunting group used for years was the 200 gr SST w/light knurl, blue sabot and 60 gr of 4198. Velocity is around 2600 fps, depending on the barrel and makes for a dependable 200 yd load. I really like Kile's 228HC so far in the 40 cals, using it could extend your range to around 300 yds if it shoots well in your gun. Now the guys use Kyle's 253HC 45 cal and 60 gr of H4198 at 2600-2660 fps depending on barrel and ignition system. It's been an accurate, low recoiling load that has always passed through on broadside shots. Good luck with your mission...

I have shot a few with the .40 Accumax 225’s around 2450fps they never seemed to overexpand and did everything I wanted.

.40 cal 240 grain Cutting Edge bullets are what I am using in the smooth blue harvester sabot with a duplex of 10gn N110/47gn I4198 at 2600fps. These bullets MUST be annealed with a torch or they will drill the sabots and key hole all over. Once anneled they stacked holes for me at various powder charges above and below what I decided to go with.

I shoot these in my 44 cal SML. 315 grain paper patched cast bullet @ 2503 fps. No leading, good accuracy, temps dont matter, superb hunting bullets, and, I have loaded 50+ of them in succession with no barrel cleaning and they shoot perfectly. I guess you could call it a paper sabot?
