This past weekend was our youth season and one of my boys was able to harvest a doe at approximately 40 yards. The load was a 275gr accumax with a mv of about 2200 fps. The deer didn’t travel far after the shot as it was slightly quartering to and bullet entered right behind the shoulder and exited about the last rib. I was suprised as both entrance and exit were about the same size and showed little expansion and very little blood. I was more concerned with this bullet expanding to much vs the opposite. Should I be looking at a different bullet at this velocity for better expansion?

In my opinion with the way you describe the angle of the entry and the exit of the bullet along with the muzzle velocity it make since to me. As far as a blood trail, most of the blood interred into the stomach area because more damage was done to the thin liner between chest cavity and the guts.
If he would of hit the shoulder on entry and a exit at the last rib you would of seen a completely deferent outcome.
I’m glad to hear he harvested a doe with only one shot and it still died ethically with no meat damage.
Congratulations!

If the gun is set up for the youth with a reduced load, and not intended for longer ranges, an xtp would have dramatic results.

What did the insides look like? The Insides were completely jello and that was very impressive, was just suprised at the lack of expansion. 2200 fps didn’t seem to far off from the 2500 I was shooting through my Cva. I do have a lot of xtps but thought that mv was a bit on the high side for them. My normal xtp load is around 1900.

What happened is: The copper jacket separated from the lead, the lead vaporized inside the cavity causing the massive damage, (I've seen it up close many times) only parts of the copper jacket and maybe the aluminum tip exited the body cavity. Even at the 2200 FPS you were shooting, 40 yards was a close shot. At that distance the XTP's would have done the same thing.

That explains it when processing it I did find what looked to shrapnel that penetrated the chest cavity from the inside but not the hide. I was suprised it went as far as it did. I didn’t believe xtp was the bullet for me in that situation. I will continue to shoot them thanks for the help.

May I ask was this a 45 cal and what was your powder charge for a reduced load lm going to need to go with a reduced load with the eye issues I have Thanks It is a 45 cal. 50gr imr 4198 through a brux 25in barrel and beast break. It will hold groups touching without issue at 100 yards. My boy is currently 6 but I do have loads that have successfully taken deer from with bullets from 200gr to 275 and from 1600fps to 2200 and have used 4 to 5 different powders If you tell me what mv you are looking for I may be able to provide some additional options in both the 50 and 45cal.

I have a tc encore Thanks I think without a brake that is about the top end of a low recoil load in my opinion. If you can measure your powder chamber 30gr of 4227 is what I have my other boys shoot out of a Cva conversion mv of 1800 with a 250gr but have a lot of room to work up. This is approx what a 20ga is.
