Recently I purchased a Remington 700 action from a estate auction for cheep. It was new in box IT has a solid bottom like it would be a single shot its a short action with a standard 308 bolt face. I have some questions Is there anything different other then the solid bottom from the standard 700 frame and if there's not could I make it a SML build? Also would it be possible to lighten it up and machine some of the bottom metal out but not all and keep the strength of the solid bottom thanks Bobby

Bobby.
That action would make a great SML. I don't know that I've ever see a 700 with a solid bottom so they must be very few of them. The 40X has a solid bottom like you are describing.. As for machining away some of the metal to lighten it up,, yes you could but you will only get a very few onces off the total weight. If it were me I'd leave it solid to retain its maximum strength..

If it was a 40X would it be stamped 40X there's no stamp like that on it. It is stainless. I guess for 90.00$ you cant go wrong!!!

If it was a 40X it would have it stamped in the side of the action. What does yours say.. Can you post a picture of the left side?

Thats a new one to me also? 40X's and XP-100's were the only solid actions I am familiar with? Richard

Slammer sent me a few pictures of the (new) action.. It looks as if Remington has brought the 40x back to the market except now its marked as a 700. This is a brand new action made within the last year or two as it has the new bar code cut in the side of the action.. This is something they have just recently started doing.. But it is for sure a 700 and it surely does have a solid bottom., single shot. Thanks for sharing this with us.. Jeff

What would the two threaded holes in the left side above the trigger assy be for?

Those holes were put in the 40X action for bolting a rear peep sight for shooting competitions.

I think that's one of the new ultimates, it has the code on the side, either way you did VERY well...

This thread reminds me of a guy's signature line on a couple of other forums which goes something like:
"My worst nightmare is that when I die, my wife will sell all my guns for the price I told her I paid for them."
What an absolute steal ya got there, slammer!

Richard --This one was in a Remington box wrapped up new like it was sold that way it wasn't on a rifle just the action, bolt, lug .trigger guard, and the three mounting screws. So someone has to sell it

You can buy just a action from Remington but it is cheaper to buy the whole gun and toss the barrel and stock. I think the only time I looked it was around 600 bucks for the action and you can buy the whole gun for around 450.

I believe they had that very action for sale a few months back on brownells. Keith Told me about it but it was gone very quickly as their was only one in stock. I could be wrong. Whenever he gets back and joins forum he may clarify. If you want to lighten that up, I'll trade you a NIB 700 repeater blued I purchased a few months back for my next build
