After hunting last year with my long barrel 40 cal, and the barrel constantly getting hung up in the thick brush walking to the stand and back out of the woods in the dark, I decided to build something with a lot shorter barrel. Most of my shots will be under 60 yards because of the thick brush in Tennessee where I will be hunting at.
After some thought, I’ve decided to use a CVA black and blue Scout for the build. With a list price under $350, how could I go wrong if it doesn’t shoot. With the gun being a 45/70 rifle the shortest I could go was 16”, but I wanted to be on the safe side of the law, so i added one inch to it.
I hooked up with Jeff at Hankins Custom Rifle for the build. He removed 8” from and re-crowned the barrel and added a 4-port self-timing tactical muzzle brake. I went with a DI plug for the ignition system. I removed the stock recoil pad and added a Kick-EZ to the butt stock. Top it off with a NF 5x25 scope.
With the short barrel, I went with 4227 for the powder. I checked the powder chamber and 53 grains was as low as I can go. Large Federal Rifle Primers is going to light the powder. I’m planning to use Fury 265 grain bonded bullets.
First trip to the range I used 53 grain with and without a wad and the Fury bullets. I’m super happy with shooting a 3 shot group without a wad at 100 yards. It measured .605” I’m planning to go up in powder weight to see if can get the group to tighten up some more.

That is a cool little rifle and a good shooter right out of the gate. Waiting to see if it tightens the groups with a bit more powder.

Congratulations on a neat build. Jeff does very good work. I had him convert a Knight KP-1 45/70 that I had to his system last year. The gun shoots tiny little cloverleafs when I do my part with 57grs. IMR 4198 with wool wad and 250 gr XTPS or 245 gr Spire points or 275 gr. Parker bullets. Note XTPs are going 2566 average fps and do blow apart. I shot to feral pigs in GA. this spring. Will be trying Spire points on deer. (2578 fps)

Those Tennessee deer are in trouble….even WITHOUT any further load development! Slick little rig you have there. 👍

I have a nick name for the build Mark, " Loud Mouth" I guarantee that is one loud little sucker!
Should be very user friendly to the shooter and death on the receiving end.

I wear double hearing protection and it’s definitely extremely loud. Short and sweet for the brush and light weight to carry.

Mark, Very cool! Guess you got the itch again. LOL! Did you ever get some range time with the sml pistol?

Mark, Very cool! Guess you got the itch again. LOL! Did you ever get some range time with the sml pistol? My plan is to lose the butt stock and turn the carbine into a pistol. With it being a CVA the only place I can find a pistol grip is through CVA. Of course, in today’s market there has been zero stock, so my only option is to make one myself. Planning to do all the load development before gun season starts this year. Then over the winter months, make a grip for it. Hopefully it will shoot the same load, because if not, I’ll have some more range time working up another load for it.

That gun looks fantastic. Great idea for how thick the stuff here in TN is. Gotta hunt where the deer are right? Ive been using 4227 with great success on my CVA scout too. This will be my first muzzleloader season with it here in TN and I am excited. Lets knock some down!

Took out the carbine before leaving for work this morning and it averaged 2410 fps out of the 17” barrel.

Consider using 195 Barnes(40 cal bullet), HLBS, wool wad, your 53g H4227 or 4198 should work well. The powder chamber prohibits the usage of like the ideal load of 33-34 g VV110 (33 vs 37 since DI). Very lightly knurl the bullet. Annealing will slightly increase the already superb accuracy. The 195 Barnes is incredibly deadly: virtually has to be experienced to believe.
Advantages are sub MOA accuracy & very light recoil,
I realize that I’m virtually the lone voice in the wilderness advocating sabot usage here on this essentially a long range/benchrest board; but with what I’m advocating , I’ve been there, done that.

Nice rig Mark.....what's it weight? I finally had time to weight the gun with and without the scope. The CVA Scout Carbine with Hanks Precision scope rail and a Hanks Precision 4 port self timing muzzle break weights in at 6 lbs 7.9 oz The NF ATACR 5-25x56, NF ultralight 4 bolt rings and a Holland’s scope level weights in at 2 lbs 13.6 oz. The combine weight of 9 lbs 5.5 oz. The scope is almost 1/3 of the total weight.
