It's been a learning curve day for me. I finally got to the shooting this morning. It is trash pick-up n mowing morning. So i sat n waited for 2 hours before i got to shoot. Its warming up quickly n i am not thrilled on that. I shoot Hawken at 25 yards 3 times cleaning patch n dry patch tween shots. So its in center dot n ready to shoot at 50 yards on next outing. No go shooting range on Sat. nor Sunday nor Weds.

Its a good thing i took 3 ML's this morning. The .45 NEF sml broke its opening/closing latch. It won't lock closed. My Hawken had me chasing its tail in circles. Had it on target at 50 yards. It would not group. I thought the red dots base was loose or the scope base i had put on the barrel. So i stopped shooting it. I got out my Blk. Diamond .50 n shot 4 times at 50 yards using Harvester sabots. With Hornady .451 . 230 xtp's. Group was good enough to go to 75 yards for another go at it. When i got home i started looking at the Hawken for its problem. Took a few minutes but found it. The wedge is worn so bad its letting the barrel move on each shot. Just as bad as a loose scope ring or base

Well i did a short term repair on wedge pin. I cut a pop-can shim n tapped it in with the wedge. I will be ordering a few new ones this week

I got 2 new wedges in, but did not take the Hawken to range on Thursday morning. I had to get one of my ML's sighted in for the season. Rifle season opens Nov. 12th & i hunt n shoot ML's no longer own a rifle. I have the .45 Hawken a FIE .45 a Renegade .54 n the Scout .45 Rock Sparker to get sighted in n loads worked up for

The question is which one will you be using?

Lol i never saw a refer truck show up here. I never saw a tick toter the whole firearms season. That's the way my luck goes. For what its worth i forgot how light the front trigger is on this Hawken once the set trigger is pulled. I had loaded it back on Dec.15th to ML hunt, saw nothing. So i took my target out n set it up at 50 yds. Going to shoot it n clean it, had gloves on my hands. Well i got braced against support 6x6 n was getting my red dot on the target. Yup i just touched the trigger sticking finger in n it went off. Missed my foot wide target, but it was a safe shot. I was shooting from my pole barn down into the ground at the 50 yds. big mound to hit into 25 yds wide n 5' high. So next time i start to shooting it will be without gloves if set trigger is set.

I have done just a bit in my backyard shooting range i now have. I started at 40 gr prb cotton over the powder charge. Ball .440 with a flannel lubed patch. I started my session n 1st shot hit the target low n left. Adjusted red dot n bumped powder charge to 50 gr n shot. Still some low n left. Load 55 gr n shot after the red dot adjustment. Hit lil left n touch low, adjust walking the booger on up ya know. Set charge at 60 fr n shot, in the red dot using the red dot. Now i have wiped bore every time with 91% alcohol for a clean bore. I run down patch n uggg dang T-7 crud ring. So my range time just ended as i learned how n what to use to clean bore out. Hot water n Dawn det. did the trick. I have this morning ruined a good Hawken stock for a long armed shooter. Yeah i whacked off 1/2" n made the butt some what straighter without that nasty bone brusing curved butt-plate. I will w/rasp it some n see if its lop now agrees with my shoulder. I also backed that trigger screw out several turns so the trigger in not a wild hair going off !

Many guys that I have heard shoot black powder swab with windex patches, damp not soaked. just a fyi. I never used T-7 but Pyrodex RS and never had the crud ring problem when I shot a smoker.
