Here to jumpstart the Paper Patched bullet thread- Can you tell us more on the process? I understand you size the 44 cal and PP that basically acts as a very thin sabot Can you share the particulars? olegburn; A few have asked about this...I will start a new thread when I can find some time dedicated specifically to SML's and paper patched bullets. We can keep all that info in that thread. Look for it: "Paper patched cast bullets for SML's"

I have a Hunter blued 44 caliber that my son uses. It's a pretty short barrel, I assume it's a youth. I'd love to have this converted into a smokeless!

I have a CVA Scout in 44 Mag that I use as a still hunting (walking) gun. Shortened the barrel to 18" and it weighs about 6.5 lbs scoped and ready to go...nice gun to carry. I would like to see a 44 Mag converted by Hank to a smokeless muzzle loader! My 44 Mag is the bottom of the three....and My CVA hunter 44 cal (originally a 444 Marlin) which is a SML is the top. The one in the middle is my SG 444...a modified 444 Marlin.

Yes, it's a 44 mag.

It seems the benefit of converting 44 mag to muzzleloader will be the ability to use reduced loads without the risk of bullet ending up in the chamber The availability of bullets would remain a question, right?

In a way you are correct, but there are alternatives...cast bullets, custom ordered jacketed bullets. I can order a custom bullet made expressly for my 44 cal muzzle loader including weight, diameter, jacket thickness, and shape. I choose to shoot cast bullets but if I ever wanted to change over to jacketed bullets it would not be a problem. There are a number of custom bullet makers both cast, swagged, and jacketed that can fulfill any need.

The two I have had personal experience with over the years (accuracy and hunting performance) are Hawk Bullets for jacketed (they offer custom bullet making services along with their standard line, and have .408 bullets), and Montana Bullets Works for cast bullets...excellent products and service. For custom cast bullet dies Accurate Molds has the best selection and the quality and service is above reproach. In all cases you need to know what you need.....jacket thickness, weight, design, etc. Both Hawk and Montana have a large product menu and Accurate has a selection of molds that is the most extensive in the business. Try these first........... or run a search for "custom bullet makers"....there are others out there as well.

Thanks Flatopusa . Hawk i knew of but Montana not so much because of harder lead in my bp pursuits . Then i needed softer lead to obturate and with less velocity it was a good preformer . I wonder if a plateing service exists like Berrys or X-treme bullets sell on theirs ?? Thanks again for the info , looks like ive more looking to do . Lol it never ends !!! Good luck with your 44 !!! I bet Hawk could fix you up too . Northern Precision makes some Beautiful .416s if youd be interested in knurling them up a few thousandths for a bore rider in your 44 . Priceing and service are excellant as well along with options offered . Worth a peek for sure !!!
