I've been reloading for 308 most of this year and have had really good results and a few flops. When I got started I was loading to spec length 2.800 and if I get over 2.810 accuracy takes a nose dive. I just recently found some Nosler partitions and Noslers data says to start at 2.770. Accurate's load data has a few loads at 2.825. From the base of my cartridge to first contact with the lands is 2.893 and my my magazine will not allow that to happen. So, where does one start?

That’s a common problem we run into. If u want the rounds to fit in the magazine u have no choice but to load them short enough. Of course, U can single feed them if u like.
Don’t be afraid to try jumping the bullets either. Some of my barrels like .080 or more jump. U never know unless u try.

Definately a common issue. Only other option to get closer to the rifling, is to use a bullet with a rounder ogive, or nose profile. Your Sierra Pro Hunter, Hornady Interloc, Rem Core loct come to mind. Just gotta try different loads till you find what your gun prefers. Kinda tough/expensive in todays environment.

I agree that jumping bullets isn't always a bad thing. I don't have the experience many here do with cartridge centerfire rifles but I shoot a good bit with a friend that shoots every caliber under the sun. With some bullet/rifle combinations I have known him to jump .100. HE does not own a Weatherby but, Weatherby seems to chamber for this not that I have any real experience with them, just that I do follow such things as I am interested in good results always.

I agree longer is usually better to get close to lands, but no hard fast rules. I have a 257wby that with a book load of 117SST shoots fine, same combo with 117 inner loc opened up to 6". Still haven't figured thay one out. I've also changed OAL in my savage 308 searchimg for 1/2" groups and not seen a bit of difference from 2.800 thru 2.865. its a solid .75"-1" gun with many loads but can't seem to shrink it anymore. You can drive yourself crazy sometimes.

I finally received my comparator and compiled all my data( feel like a secretary with all these notes). I'm jumping 155gr Bergers .073 and getting sub half MOA groups out of my Saure 101 in 308 WIN. I got myself all set up to do a latter test and would'nt ya know my Magnetospeed took a dump SOB!!!!! Chrony won't pick up any knew shots! I'm starting to figure out some of this reloading stuff just seems like i've always got a hitch in one way or another. Still beats the hell outa payin 65 bucks a box for 308 ammo!

Seems like gun manufacturers have had very little thought/regard for those of us who reload. The darned detachable mags are too darned short!
Never, never, never will I part with my blind mag Savage 112 and 12's! No such thing as OAL being too long.
I have and old Rem 788 in .22-250. It's most accurate load is too long to fit in the magazine, so it gets used as a single shot.
