Hey guys I just bot a box of the .402 Pittman 228 gr bullets and want to try them in my Rem 700 with a heavy Rock Creek bbl. and Hank's breech plug. I would like to know what powders would work best for these light weight bullets and what kind of speed I can expect? Any load data wood be great, Thanks.

I think buckeye68 is shooting 250gr bullets with 4895 from a #6 contour barrel not sure of the powder charge but am most certain he is using a wool wad. Maybe he will chime in.

I have yet to shoot a 225 in my 40s but I think 4198 will work with that weight, seems like mid 50s If I remember correctly but wait Til someone gives you an exact charge weight before you jump on it.

I tired using the 225 and didn’t have any luck because of my larger powder chamber. I ended up using 250 Pittman, wool wad and H4895.

I shot the 228 Pittman last fall using 56 gr of H4198. Velocity was 2690 fps (8 fps ES) out of a 20" 40 cal Pac-Nor, Modified Sendero contour barrel using Hank's breech plug with standard modules. Recoil was mild, for a 9.5 lb rifle with no brake. I finished it 3 days before Ky MZ season so I haven't shot it much. I only had time to shoot 1 group at 200 yds and it was less than 1". I shot 6 deer with it, all passed through, 5, behind the shoulder, 1 head shot, all one shot kills, 4 DRT, 2 ran about 50 yds, ranging from 60 to 238 yds. I was very pleased with the performance of the 228. As always, work up to only what should be a safe load in your gun, not just start with a load some guy says he uses...safety first.

I have shot the 228 with vv n530 at 71 gr. If I remember right at 2850-2900 fps. Best I could get was one inch group.

This is in NO WAY A RECOMMENDATION! In my 10ML2/40 PN , 209, 26” , 16 twist, 8X scope off of a fold-up table with basic rests , 225 AccuMax 100 yd - ragged hole, 200 yd slightly <1” 300 yard (variable 3-5 mph wind) slightly below 3” , @ 2940-2950’/sec with 7/70 VV110/Varget. Wool wad and smooth sized. That load is likely pretty hot. 6/60 brought it down to 2640 (IIRC) . This year , I plan on 6.5/65. This 10ML2 well bedded, airgauged, PN select 40 (401/408) , 1.5# SSS comp trigger is incredibly accurate for what it is. Constructed in 2001 or 2002.
40 RC, 26”, 60g powder chamber, 75 4895, 275 Fury , HIS , 24 power S3, ragged hole 100, 1 1/2” @ 300 . 2830’/sec. Above and this load ES we’re in single digits. Both - wire brush once in and out between shots. Both were relatively dirty, but accurate loads. This year, DI and 253 Hammer or 278 AM and 78 and 75 H4895 respectively. I’ll report.
I plan to start shooting the ultra lite 40 next week. Starting will be 228 AM and 60g H322. I wish I had requested a 50g powder chamber instead of my requested 60, but 60 (4166) is what it is or some lesser amounts of faster powder such as 4198 would be considered. Live and learn. I’ll report also.

After labor day, with my bolt clone. I want to try 228 with 70 gr of h322, should be low 50s for pressure. I also need some cooler weather for testing.

Keep us posted on the skinny gun, I'm interested to see what it does. Bill, others, The report is coming on “The Diamond”, the ultra-lite 40. It’s sighted in and ready to hunt. My wife thinks “Diamond” is an appropriate name for that rifle. Don’t ask why. FWIW, I’m more pleased with this rifle than any other rifle I’ve ever owned. I spent all day getting my 700 Rem/Brux and “The Diamond” ready for next weekend, opening of shotgun/MLing season.

sew: That is saying a great deal as you have had some good ones over the years.

Looking forward to some range and field reports.
I know you built that gun specifically to hunt with and I like it when a gun is purpose built and then fills all expectations, I have little doubt yours will fit the bill.

sew: That is saying a great deal as you have had some good ones over the years. Jim, I’m intentionally leaving my 10ML2/40 PN in the safe. It will consistently group 3-shot groups into a ragged cloverleaf , or at worse 0.6”, at 200 yards. 225 AccuMax and a very hot load of 110/Varget (2950’/sec). When it comes back out of the closet, there’ll be 1 g less 110 and 5g less of Varget. All 3 40s have custom triggers set at 1.5# and Richard’s 45 is well below that.

My ML11 .40 RB PacNor is nearly a twin to yours, trigger also but I cannot shoot that well. Keep us posted on the new rig.

I don’t know how many 40s have chambers, but I think the chamber should be annotated on the barrel. As stated earlier, I asked for 60 but wish I had a 50g chamber. I see VV530, 4895 and 4198 mentioned but don’t rule out the inbetween powders like H322, 2015, etc .. I suspect most 40s don’t have chambers but some do. I’m 74, likely in the last quarter. My rifles will outlast me, surely. So, I’m typing up every detail I can , loads, results, etc. So, who ever ends up with these will not only be safe but will have all the information I can provide. Probably good to put the chamber volume on the barrel also. These lighter loads in the 40s and others are where Quick Load can really come in handy. Another thing to consider is 209 ignitions with ventliners or bushings (0.030, 0.035, 0.040) , HIS also with 3 bushing sizes, and DI make quite a difference. My 7/70 VV110/Varget load in my 10ML2 with 209 ignition and 0.030” bushing shooting the 225g AM @ 2950 (which is already likely too hot, the load is coming down) if used in my lite 40 with DI could be over the top. I listed those ignitions in ascending order of energy. As so many have stated , drop down some if going to DI from a lesser ignition system. With a 40, make sure about whether it has a powder chamber. I didn’t type this for the experienced; rather, the less experienced in this area, self included.

You have been shooting a .40 far longer than most and have more of them than most. I would think your RB .40 might be 15 years or more.
