Ideal shooting day at the Catawba Valley Wildlife Club in Hickory NC. Weather was overcast at 37* this morning with no wind. Today, shot both the Brux and the Shilen barreled Rem. .45 700ML’s. Like I started out last week, I used a Clays/H-4198 duplex to foul the barrel. Results somewhat the same. The 250 XTP’s averaged 2832 fps with a 32 fps ES and a 1.2” group.
OK, so I only modified six 300 gr. XTP’s. I ran the countersink in up to the shoulder which left the bullet at approximately 274 gr.
For group #2 I used 78 gr. of IMR-4198 with a veggie wad over the top. My velocity averaged 2856 fps with a 19 fps ES and a 1.3” three shot group.
Group #3 was the same bullet with 78 gr. of H-4198 which surprisingly only yielded 2782 fps with a 51 fps ES and a 1.4” group. Seems like testing I had done in the past with those two powders in conjunction with a booster, gave me similar velocities? Hmmm?
So on to the Shilen……………….
Group #4 I used for a fouler………the same as with the Brux. Not good just like last week.
Moving up in weight to the 300 SST, which if you recall last week gave some pretty decent results once I started sizing them looser. This week the group was a tad bigger at 100 yards at .812” But when I moved out to 300, it repeated the same size at 1.8” for three shots. Note: with my scope pretty well zeroed at 100, I used the second mil dot down for 300 and my group impacted 9 ½” high. I was actually aiming at the bull below. I should have used the first mil dot and would have been just slightly low.
Back to the Brux with a 300 gr. XTP and 10/70 Clays/2015 duplex. Last week I shot Clays/H-322 in the same amount and I wanted to see the difference, if any? Also, the switch from one powder to another caused the same problem as last week. But, as I added more shots to the group, it kind of came together.
Looking to see if maybe a lighter bullet would do any better with the combination I shot a five shot group with the 250 XTP. It put the last three of five shots in .581” with all five going .911”. Looking better!
For the last group, I went back to the 300 XTP with the same 10/70 Clays/2015 load. This time it started much better than group #7. I am getting more of a feeling that a few shots might be necessary when switching powders for the barrel to settle down.
Next week I may try hollowing out some SST’s and see how they perform? While the hollow base XTP’s did not shoot any bug holes, they were not a disaster either? And considering they are what they are unmodified, they did not do that bad. They also might do better with a duplex…who knows?
