While sizing some bullets the wheels in my head started turning and this is what came out of it! I have at times played with bullets, messing with the nose and con-caving the base but they were labor intensive. With this mod, I just run the counter sink up to the shoulder and done! It makes a 300 gr. bullet a 274 gr. bullet. Should be great for obturation purposes, no? I only did five and will see what they do tomorrow. (Tuesday is calling for rain) I may be peeing in the wind but who knows? images uploadonline photo sharing

So you end up with the length of a 300 for BC purposes...a base that should flare and obturate quickly...and walla!. Anxiously watching. By the way Richard that countersink is broken on one end Drop

What kind of bullet was that to start with?

Last time you altered bullets it worked out well...Can you capture these bullets when you shoot them for post shot examination...?

good luck. How hard is it to keep the weight of each bullet the same?

I'm waiting for your results with a lot of interest as well. Funny, I was thinking a little while ago about an FPB type bullet of .4505 dia. with a long copper skirt. It wouldn't need sizing yet should obturate very quickly. I was also wondering (maybe far too simplistically I am guessing) why manufacturers simply don't just elongate their bullet designs if it increases bc and helps retain down range energy and velocity?

Elongating a bullet will only help BC if the weight of the bullet goes up as well. You can have to identical shaped bullets. One with an air pocket in it and the other one completely solid. The solid bullet weighing more the the air pocket bullet will retain its energy longer therefore giving it a better BC. Is this difference measurable, maybe, maybe not when we are talking small amounts of differences, but throw a golf ball and a ping pong ball, both of them leave your hand at relatively the same speed, the ping pong ball is not near the weight of the golf ball but the golf ball will go many times farther than the ping pong ball...
If you look at ballistic data for a particular caliber.. and compare a light weight bullet to a heavy weight bullet and let's say the muzzle velocity of the light bullet is 3000 fps and the heavy bullet is 2700 fps, the light bullet will hit the target first at 100 yards, but at 1000 yards the heavy weight bullet passed the light bullet and hits the target while the light bullet is still trying to catch up...

Richard.... Do you have a swager die?.....Put a point on those. Remember the XTP's that smokeater used to point up...They were a hot item in the 50's a few years ago....waiting on the results. Zen

First of all, I knew they would not blow thru as I had shot many that I machined the entire base off exposing all the lead. They do work.........results to follow if I get my "report done!"
