While I'm waiting on my R700 build I thought I'd dress up my Encore with a new stock set. Came from Tony's Forends and Grips. He concaves the forend pillars to match the radius of the barrel, definitely tightened up the group.

Finally after two weeks, USPS, a package was received from East Bend. However, no pictures nor narrative until range time is spent and it groups to show. Maybe just one picture after this one. It’s currently wearing a 40 MM B&L 4200 6x24 for load work ups. No shots yet. That makes me drool Sew !!! Wow !!! I LIKE !!!

While waiting for my 40 parts pile to be assembled i got a brainstorm ......
I think i need another 45 . BUT i could use some help . Its a ss 700ml and i figure a barrel nut will suffice for it . Now its a 50 with the hunter 209 bolt/bp kit . What bp do i need to go with what i have to be milder smokeless capable with this rifle ?? A nut barrel of lighter contour and bp is all i want for this one , maybe a lug . Its bedded and pillared , recoil paded now and is a stock 700ml otherwise . Pretty ultilitarian and a back-up . Is this possible ?? It needs a barrel that i cant find used in good shape , stock 700ml 50 or preferably 45 , so why not ?? Ive heard that my bolt nose wont work . Is this true ?? Whats the differences ??

I just realized I never did a range report on the gun I posted pictures of with the new Mesa action.
I had no intention of shooting at the KY Challenge but we had an open bench so I weighed out some charges at the last minute and filled up the relay.
While I didn't set the world on fire it shot decent for a hunting rig for just pulling a load out of the blue and shooting it. ( I do however know this is generally an accurate load) keep in mind it was unfired until I took it to KY. the load was 70 grains of H-4198 with a 300 Aeromax @ 2725 avg from the 23.3" barrel. (tested on Friday before the shoot, zeroed the scope and recorded the drops)
The gun weighed 10 lbs 5 oz on good scales which I think was the lightest gun shot other than a break action. It shot a respectable 1.431 group @ 400 finishing 2nd in the relay behind Mr.Pittman with a 1.2 something so it has potential as a pure bred hunting rig.
like I said, all the gun you need for hunting out to 400+, even 500 with the right conditions but 400 yards is a long stretch under field conditions, a very steady rest is a MUST for effective humane kills.
I will never shoot an animal that far with these guns unless I have the perfect conditions, my longest to date is 370 yds and that was last season.
I am anxiously waiting a range report on your Squirrel rifle Steve, that thing is a sweet rig, perfect set up for your purpose. It looks great in person, the builder did a great job.

Hillbill, sounds like you stood your ground there at the Challenge! (Have been waiting to see the YOUTUE video but nothing updated from JEFF), need to get back to the range and burn some powder to check my grouping 400 and further, they were put together for hunting.

New build
45 cal #6 brux 26" 4 gill self timing tactical brake custom 700 sa fluted bolt tactical bolt handle pillar bedded and fully glass bedded boyds varmit pro with adjustable cheek piece, laminated weaver super slam 3-15 with tactical turrets and side focus HIS ignition
Hopefully it will be finished at the end of next month? I hope! Does anyone here have any experience with weaver super slam scopes? I bought this one used, at a good price I believe. I hear they have pretty good glass for the the money? I know there are a lot better scopes and I may invest in one in the future and I could always slap it on another gun.But for now it will have to do. I just wondered if anyone has had good luck with them?

No experience personally but I know a few have used them in the past, I'm sure they will chime in.

Richard My Bolt gun also has a fly cut bolt face, it started life as a .223 so I didn't need to weld it up. My preference for these rigs is the slotted bolt face to slide the modules in and out, I like the system much better. I have welded up a 308 bolt face before and cut the slot, same on this one. Hillbill why couldnt a magnum modual be used (.537) in a standard (.480) bolt face and skip the welding ?? Isnt there enough of the modual to grab and support to just do this ?? Or does everthing bolt face included get too thin to be reliable ?? Id bet this is why you havent done that in the first place . . I agree this system IS a much nicer way to do this . Does Hankins offer this modification ?? If not who does ?? Pierce Engineering has complete bolts for $450 with it done !!! Ouch !!!

Just go direct ignition and don't look back. This seems to be the easy answer that complicates things . I wanted something easier for field use . Getting somebody to do this modification is a problem or those that will ya cant find out about . Jeez !!! Pierce will sell a bolt but not the job . Bestill who taught Pierce wont do them either . For what i see bolts sell for as this 1 is brand new i have , Pierce may just sell a bolt and its fluted and nitried already with a nicer handle and alum shroud and trick firing pin . I can drive to Pierce . Nobody else needs the money . Its either that or see if Defiance will put that nose on their anTI action and dump this new Remington 40-X action period . I wanted a lighter weight mzl anyhow and its almost doubled in value from what i paid . Somebody Will do it . Maybe that titanium Mesa . Pierce makes fine actions too . It Will get done . One way or Another . Richard i appreciate you trying to help . Thank you . It was nice that You responded . I Respect that . And i also see DI and HIS headspace the same . Its not over yet even wth the feature i seek ......

Just go direct ignition and don't look back. What I did. I am an Arkansas deer and varmint hunter. Taking into account that most of my shots are <100 yards, some between 100-200, and a few between 200&300, that 40 caliber is legal, that I want adequate but no more energy that necessary (every action has an equal reaction - recoil/scope stress, weight for the increased strength) , my loads reflect my desires. Since as calibers go down and obturation becomes more difficult, more effort seems necessary with the smaller calibers to get more consistent obturation. This is especially true, if shooting light to moderate loads such as in a break open or like I plan to shoot in my ultralight. Faster powders, annealed copper bullets, softer jacketed bullets ((225/250/275 AMs vs the hard cores) , Furys, Full forming/sizing, in many cases using a saboted load (which still has a place in smokeless MLing !! ) all can make the obturation more consistent. The more consistent the obturation, the more accurate. These low to moderate loads verses the more common (on this board) high pressure/velocity loads require some different measures to obtain the most consistent obturation. Sometimes wads are helpful - especially more so with 40 cals verses 45 cals. I prefer the convenience of HIS and use it in my 45 with easy to obturate loads, and sometimes with hotter loads with easier to obturate loads such as 275g Fury bullets and including saboted loads. However… As Richard states, DI is a significant help in quick, efficient obturation. I use it virtually exclusively.

Just finished my new hunting rig for this season but for some reason it says the files are too big and won't load the pics. anyway Mesa action mag boltface, twisted barrel spiral flute handle 24" 20 twist Brux #6 straight 8 flute Titanium 5 port gill brake Mesa Altitude stock Greyboe bottom metal w/ storage compartment bedded in Trigger tech Special 2 stage Cerakote ink black NF 6 screw ultralight rings Sightron SIII PLR 6x24 scope Holland scope level bipod rail bedded to stock Will be shooting 303 HCs in front of Benchmark @ 2920 or so, will find out Saturday as I have bullets sized, loads weighed and scope bore sighted. Hopefully it will shoot well, this same recipe has been a proven performer in the past. As described it weighs 10lbs 11 oz, no featherweight but certainly not a heavy weight either.

Fired it up last night shot @ 104 yds 92 grns of Benchmark with some 300 Aeromax I had sized a good while back for another gun my boresight was actually pretty close, shot one was 2" high slightly right, the next 4 were in a cluster almost touching shot #1. Bullet fit was extremely loose but it seemed to shoot well. speeds were 2865 avg which was down a bit from what I expected? This barrel might be a bit slower than others I have tested?
Brought it home and removed it from the stock to check for rub marks anywhere and rechecked torque on everything, standard procedure on a new gun. I tightened the bullet fit up some and weighed out more charges, will fine tune today or tomorrow to get it ready for the season. Seems like it will be a shooter though.

finished sighting it in yesterday and a friend wanted to look at it while I was shooting so he met me there. He has been wanting one for years.
I put 3 shots in about .300 right before he got there so I let him fire 2 shots to make a 5 shot group, it ended up being in the .6s with two different shooters. He was very impressed and would not leave without adopting it as his own so now I'm down to the .40 Apex for this season, been out in the garage sizing 297 Hammers and weighing out RL-16. I will verify it's still good to go in a day or two. I have yet to fire it since I killed my Ohio deer last year in Dec, I'm sure it's still good. By the way the 92 grn load of Benchmark in the 24" 20 twist Brux .45 netted right at 2900 with a properly sized 303 HC, it also shot very nicely. The new Daddy is very happy with his adoption.
