Does anyone know if large pistol primers will work in cases that take large rifle? They seem to fit. Same with small pistol primer. Would they work in small primer rifle cases.
If these are interchangeable, even if not perfect, it would allow some flexibility with reloading while this shortage continues.
Not trying to win any matches, just trying to keep being able to shoot/train and at least have reliability and safety.

They will ignite your powder but the cups are much softer and they seat a little deeper in primer cup. Will it make your gun go bang yes but I certainly don’t recommend using pistol primers in place of rifle primers. At higher chamber pressures you are likely to have your firing pin pierce the primers allowing hot gases into action heading towards your face.

Reading more and more of this. I'll pass. Maybe see if you can trade your pistol for some rifle primers?

So, what I did was load rifle primers in my new .458 Socom cases. Not because I did not have large pistol primers, I did it because I assumed it took rifle primers. I just got the gun and have not even fired it. Only loaded 10 rounds to take to the range to function fire and get on paper. I have reloaded for a long time and am pissed at myself for overlooking the primer required. Was focused on powder, bullets and COL. They fit fine albiet being exactly flush with the case instead of slightly recessed. Should I pull the bullets and deprime these or just go ahead and shoot them and not make the mistake again? An example of even an experienced reloader making a mistake.

I didn’t want to muddy the waters but all my load data for 458 SOCOM is using pistol primers and I believe the brass is cut for pistol primers. With the lower pressures of that particular cartridge you should be fine. With rifle primers in that particular cartridge I believe you can get slam fires. I think my primers set a little below flush. I would have some concerns about primers. Standing proud I would not use. I would probably say you are fine but watch for slam fires and you should be fine. I am assuming you are shooting in an AR. Bolt gun I would personally not hesitate. I would be interested to hear what type of load your working on and gun suppressed or not. Good luck feel free to ask more questions. Lots safer to ask and get more opinions than just pull the trigger. The 458 SOCOM is a fun cartridge I’m hoping to play with some subsonic stuff in the future. Since the waters are muddied the other times I have shot pistol primers in rifles is with “Cat Sneeze” loads these are very light loads of pistol powder in rifle casings using buck shot pellets of appropriate size for bore. I played with those back in late 80’ thru the 90’s lots of fun for shooting vermin and small game at under 50 yards.

Thanks Joel. I will load one at a time and burn them up getting on paper. So the gun is an AR style. Built from scratch. It is meant for deer hunting for me. A friend has had one for 3-4 years now and it is awesome on deer. Not trying to get cute with fast, light stuff, or slow heavy stuff. So far I plan to use 325 FTX's and 300 HP's. I am starting with by buddies proven load of 29 gr lil'gum. I have 5744, n110, H110, and a few other powders that may work. No suppressor. Not sure those are legal in NYS but it would be nice to have if they were. I like that they make mags for this that are specifically made for 458 socom that cannot be loaded with 223. Would not want to have that be a problem with the laws here. You can use 223 AR mags and load 10 458's in then am I compliant? not sure so not going to try it. It's a deer gun. 10 rounders for the range and fun and 10 round AR mags for hunting which hold 3 rounds and be compliant with hunting regs.

I am using the 225 Hornady Monoflex and H110 and so is my brother. We both have fast twist barreled pistols and like them very much. 458 Socom is a wonderful 150yard deer gun. I don’t remember off the top is our load is lit off with regular pistol or magnum pistol primers. I am sure you will like your new deer gun.

Today is paper test day and getting on paper. It's cold (19 degrees Farenheit) but very calm. I installed a Nikon 3 x 9 standard duplex scope on it that has been on another rifle I haven't used in a long time. About the primers. I will shoot these rounds up and also deprime all the brass that I primed but did not load. I've done this before for other reasons on some 7mm Mag brass that had primers that were opening up my groups. If you are interested I will post a range report later on. My Barrel is 1:14 twist by the way.

Off topic here: I have never owned this style of rifle. I think they are interesting but I always worried about having one due to all the compliance issues in this state. This one is fully compliant. Pinned mag, etc, etc. Being that's it's a deer rifle and not intended for defensive use, I'm not concerned about the "inconveniences" of getting this platform street legal in our crazy state. However, for the first time in my life, When I walk out the door to bring this out to my truck to go to deer camp and shoot, it will be in a case and not exposed. I can just imagine someone seeing me, in my camo pants, face scarf, and carrying a black rifle and picking up the phone. Not that I would get in trouble, but just don't need that encounter. Any other time I leave the house with a rifle or two, I usually just sling it over my shoulder and walk out the door, maybe carrying a second one. Sad to think that way but I do.

We are in rural Indiana, very gun friendly. I hear you on the black rifle tho. I never cared for them, due to the hype either. But then a buddy showed me one in a deer caliber, and I started getting some interest. Now they are multiplying. Lol. My wife and boy shoot them due to the adjustability, lightweight, and low recoil of certain rounds. To lower their flashiness or tame any paranoia, a camo paint job makes them look less scary, especially wearing a scope and slung with barrel up in. Just another perspective. Have fun.

We do have an AR forum you can visit. Please give us the range report when you have time. The more info the better.
