Please forgive me as I am new to the message board. I’m sure this topic has been covered. I do not have my muzzleloader yet, but will get it it as soon as one is available. I am trying to get all of my ducks in a row before I get the gun. Here in my part of Virginia, all of the IRM 4198 and H 4198 are gone. Cannot find a pound anywhere. I am an avid reloader and I have IMR 4227 on hand. Does anyone have any experience with this powder. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Again I apologize if this topic has been covered.

Just to get ahead of the ones that would have answers , no doubt they will wanna know your ignition system whether be 209 primer modules or direct ignition.. mostly need bullet weight and type and more then likely your barrel profile whether break action,700 Remington action ect..

The gun will be a break action CVA Scout V2. The ignition system will primer modules and I plan on shooting 275 grain bullets, probably the Pittman accumax.

I have used a lot of 4227 in the past but my barrel is long and fat and I use direct ignition. It is a little faster than 4198 but works great. I would figure about 2 grains less than 4198. In your break action I would go with 58-60 grains with the 275 bullet. Should get you in the 25 to 2600 fps range. It's clean and meters well. I am shooting 69 gr and getting mid 2900's with a 300 grain bullet Welcome to the forums

No 4198, so what about RL 7 ? If you can find 4759 or vv110 or 120. They would certainly work. the 4759 & 110 are faster burn raise pressure quickly but very good one powder works of art!

Brianb you don't have to wait until April to get a Scout. I don't know where in VA you are but Green Top in Ashland has them on their website. I ordered mine off the website and they called to let me know the Scout 45/70 was not in the store but would get it from their distributor. As soon as it arrives I will send it to Jeff who has already agreed to convert it for $425. If you go this route you just need to send the barrel and muzzle brake with a money order.

A couple of shops in vicinity of wytheville did have some IMR4198. But as fast as it goes now I can’t 100% tell you they have it now.
