It’s general firearms season here in VA but I elected to tote the muzzleloader still yet to try and put one under her belt. Went in a piece of public I’d not stepped foot in this season to hunt a spot I’d found a couple years ago around a mile and half deep. Actually bumped a few deer in this process including the doe he was trailing and was on my knees hunkered down at the time of the shot. Luckily she eased off and he didn’t know know I was around but as she went to leave he exposed himself giving me about a 50yd shot. Shot went high shoulder/spine(rattled nerves/ half poor shooting position) but it made quick work of this old mountain buck. Couldn’t be happier it’s my first 10 and it’s no easy task crossing paths with one of these smart guys that’s had to beat who knows how many hunters in their time.

Really nice looking deer. Going in and getting one like that gives a special satisfaction.

Thanks guys. I had to redeem myself somewhat since I was coming off of a miss 2 weeks ago on a stud of a deer with the gun. It took a little of the salt out of the wound.

You earned that one. Heck of a public land deer.

The work definitely started when he hit the ground. I was alone and blocked it out on the ground and it got loaded in an exo mtn gear pack. A lot of learning involved in this hunt being this one was the first I’d done this to on my own and loaded in a pack. I had to go down through a gully that was pretty rocky and steep and knew the cape would be toast by the time I got him to the truck if I were to drag it out. Needless to say I was sore for a couple days on this one. Just sweetens the story to go with the shoulder mount on the wall when it’s completed.
