Where I live in NE Arkansas we’re having our first 9 day “gun” (ML/SG/Pistol) season in decades. Ive passed up this deer 3 times this season with my SWAT XP crossbow. But, not for my MLer. 88 yards, head on - he wouldn’t turn- and was being spooked by something so I shot right in the brisket. Fell instantly. Never twitched. 3 1/2 years old. Looks like a twin to the one i killed with the OBO 45 last year. Killed one 2 days before also with the 40 and was going to used Richard’s 45 this day, but my Bushell 4200 finally died. I was trying to give the 2 rifles equal time.

Pray for Jimbob who has been in the hospital for a few days with Covid. He’s on the mend.

Congrats, sew! WHat bullet/powder combo you use to hunt? For years, I’ve used light loads of 37g VV110/195B or 200SST for my hunting which is <200 yards. I’m foolishly, just a minimalist. Bullet placement was critical. With Jimbob’s 40 and Richard’s 45, I moved up the scale a little. Each is shooting 2830’/sec with a 275 Fury(40)and 278g AccuMax(45), 75g H4895(40) and 72g H4198(45). With my scope on Richard’s dying, I’ve only used the 40 on 2 deer in the past few days: a 6-pt for the farmer and this deer for us. They just fell like hit with a hammer. A little extra energy just might be helpful. I’m now hunting at much longer ranges also. The 40 load with a reasonably good rests/table (but not like a proper benchrest) , i got a ragged hole @100, touching cloverleafs @200, and a 300 yd 1 1/2” group (horizontal) in variable 3-5mph winds. 6x24 S3 scope. That’s 16#+ including scope, having to serve as a woods rifle*, has very little recoil. My 10ML/40 is being used by my son for the first time in 10 years as he has overcome his long term drug usage. He’s finally hunting again, and hopefully crop dusting again in the forseeable future. 😊 Life is good. Guess I’ll be forced to get a new “woods” MLer.😉

I’ve been hunting with the Jimbob, 40 cal piece of artillery- actual weight with the S3 is a little >16# for the past 9 days. My son has had a “problem” for the past 10 years and couldn’t hunt. This year is a new beginning. He used my walk around 10 ML2/40 PN. Its now his. Just like 10 years ago, except for deer size, he killed his deer at very last light on the last day of the season. His previous deer is under “my son” a few threads down”. That was last light also. Life is finally good again. 195 Barnes @ 2630 2” hi 100, 3” lo 200. Deer went 10 yards.

I'm sincerely thanking God for your testimony, Steve!

Best wishes for you and your son Steve! Bill, thank you. It’s been a rough 10 years, but prayers of so many have been answered. Incidentally, I was disappointed in the performance of the 195 Barnes: the deer went 10 yards instead of the usual straight down. In Dec, (next gun season 26-28) , we’ll see how the 228 (son’s) and the 278 (mine) AccuMax’s do. That 278 is a sleek looking bullet!
