How consistent is bore dia. In 45-70 apex's? Does anyone know if .451 bullets would go down the barrel unsized? I saw hornady offers .451 pistol bullets in 100 count boxes for about $30.. Was hoping to use these for target and trigger practice.

My Apex will shoot Nosler .451 bullets straight from box to the gun without sizing. Hornady .452 bullets need to be sized down a little. I would get a box and give them a try.

How tight are they and how much force is required to get them down?? Is .451 the dia. you would size larger bullets to, or would you go smaller?

Parker . 451 bullets go down the Begerra barrel just right for me right out of the package ansd shoot very accurately . Hornady .452 need to be sized out of the box u need a hammer. once sized they will shoot very accurate also .
Being a break open guy in this SML world i have found a Sizer and a bullet knurler. are essential tools for accuracy

The Barnes TEZ is another option. Did not require sizing in the two 45/70 Apex barrels I had just needed a slight knurl up.

The .451 bullets go down with one hand pressure, not tight and not loose. Each barrel may be a little different so it's really a trial and error to find the proper size for your barrel.

Mine is still in 45/70 mode but I tried .451 xtp's and some others and it just needed a jab with a bullet stater to form some shallow grooves on the bullet then it was smooth loading from there. So I would say my barrel is about perfect for sabotless.

Mine is Awful. A 250 TEZ will barley make it past the muzzle then it's ok until you get about 7 inches from the breech and then the bullet just drops. If they made a crappie barrel you can figure I would be the one to get it. Leaves me no choice but to shoot 40cal with sabots. And it shoots them ok. It was not what I was hoping for.

My 45-70 Apex will take Barnes 250 TEZs, 250 MZs, and BE275's unsized without much problem.
It will differ from gun to gun.
I need to size SSTs/FTXs to .450 for a fit.

My new begerra barrel encore uses parkers 270 e-max no sizing just a push with a bullet starter and then it go,s down snug but not hard

Though I haven't fired the gun yet, I did try stuffing some .451 bullets down the barrel to see if they would go down. I tried a scorpion pt golf (which I don't plan to use with smokeless powder) and barnes tez. Both were a little stiff to start, but once down a few inches the went down pretty smoothly to the breach plug. I tried lining up the rifling marks and passing them down a second time. The pt gold was definitely easier the second time down whereas the barnes took about the same amount of pressure as the first time. I'm anxious to see what they do at the range.

[quote author=" strider" Any noticeable problems (or benefits) using the boat tail tmz's? I'm wondering if their tapered base would make them easier to line up with the bore and to start down the barrel. Do you shoot them over wads??

Imo most are using flat base bullets to fill the bore upon obturation....The tez's worked better saboted, so they kind of carried over to the sabotless game....There has been some testing of full-formed boattails in sub caliber guns with good reports....Get some of both and let us know how they compare....

I wanted to mention that the xtp's I was talking about was the .451 230gr but the 250 and 300gr .452 would need sizing to load. I tried the harvester pt gold 260 and 300gr and they loaded just right for my liking also.
