Just wondering if the barrel on a new sml needs any special breaking in or seasoning to condition the barrel? Also when and how often do you guys clean your sml's??

Your question gets brought up often and it seems as its to each his own...Breach plug cleaning/maintenance is what I focus on routinely say every 30 shots or so as the flame channel will get fouling buildup...I am running a savage plug with a ventliner on showgirl and a savage plug with a .030" bushing on Bigmac...My new gun will have an Arrowhead plug with a bushing also...They all shoot a bare 209 primers...If I start to get sticking/swelling primers, it has been a fouled flame channel between the primer and the ventliner/bushing that's the cause....If I am going to store my guns for an extended period I will take the breechplug out and leave it out until I want to shoot again...My guns like a dirty barrel so far and how I'm sizing my bullets, its working out good.... Richard on the other hand ,cleans his barrel after every range visit....Jeff Hankins to my knowledge hasn't cleaned his gun in two years, maybe more and still headshots deer over 200 yds away....There are some powders that are dirtier than others like 4759 and 5744...I'm shooting straight h4198 to keep it simple...If you are shooting saboted and you encounter a blown sabot shot, then its best to thoroughly clean the barrel and start over... Others have different routines, so take them all in and see how your gun likes it,either clean or dirty...

Thank you for the advice. So you consider H4198 to be one of the cleaner burning powders? If a particular load shoots better from a fouled barrel, then how much do you have to foul it after a thorough cleaning? Can it be fouled enough by just shooting primers or do you actually have to fire shots through it? Sorry for asking questions which may be very basic, but I'm new to this smokeless business and would like to have a solid understanding of the fundamentals before moving ahead. Can't think of a better place to learn than to tap into the accumulated wealth of knowledge and experience that resides on this board!

Generally no you don't need to condition a barrel for SML but clean it before it has its first shot. My gun likes two or three shots to foul it, but the first shot on a clean barrel is still within an inch at 100 to the fouled group. I probably clean the gun completely once a year after all seasons are over.

Check out Richards weekly range visit post...He will shoot a fouling group which most of the time is MOA or better...Then he will try out different loads and post results...very informative....
