I am on the 3rd season and for the 2nd time it has to go back to the factory, last year the front lens gaskets came out, this year the cross hairs move all over the target when you move your head. if your cheek don't weld in the same spot you don't hit where you aim. going with a 3-9-40 no hash marks or circles. Not decided on brand yet . I didn't think my stock savage kicked hard enuf to kill a scope. I have a drawn hunt and put a 27 year old japan made tasco on it to get me by. If the rest of their scopes are of the same quality I have bought my last 1.

When I started getting more in to the rifle game I learned that I was tightening my rings down too much.
I have a Nikon omega 3-9x40 with bdc reticle and haven't had any issues. I am using a vortex viper hp on my McRem so far has held up very well.
A scope you could look into is SWFA I'm going to try one of those next. Good luck

I have 4 nikons in different mags, never had an issue at all with them, I did however have the same issue you are having with a leupold vx3 2.5x8..

What's your budget for an optic?

The issue you are describing right now sounds like incorrect parallax. That scope should be parallax free at 100yds. My questions:
1. At what distance and magnification are you experiencing this problem? You will see it more at high magnification, SFP, and inside of 75yds (worse as it gets closer) and past 100yds (worse as it gets further) with fixed parallax optics assuming 100yds parallax free.
2. How high is your optic mounted? You should be mounted low enough to get a consistent weld. The trend is towards M1913 rails and rings which tend to be higher than mounts like Leupold STD or DD and Talley LW. Guys use these mounts but still shoot with a comb that is too low.
3. Do you have proper eye-relief? If you have any scope shadow it will comping your problem.

Shadow is the black ring around the optic when you are not centered behind the optic and is most clearly evident when your eye-relief is incorrect. If your eye is too close or too far you get a full shadow and it looks like you are watching through an aperture. Assuming your eye-relief is appropriate then a comb that is too high/low/thin/thick will cause shadow to the offending direction (a comb too low for the optic will have a shadow in the lower FOV) and a resultant POI shift away from the shadow (high POI for low shadow). The easiest way I guess is to use the Rossman technique of Google-Fu: Disclaimer: This was the first appropriate pic on Bing, I am not a Marine.

Thes guns are the worst scope killers I have ever seen. Attention to detail is a must 1 scope base hase to be contacting the reciever completely...make sure it isnt riding on the recoil lug 2 make sure the base screws arent bottoming out before they ttighten correctly 3. Qualit scope...base... and rings are a MUST. 4 Follow.MFG specs for base and rung screw torque's 5 Use a small amount od blue thread lockeron each screw. I find it best to apply it with the tip of a tooth pick. Hope this helps Drop

What he's described doesn't sound like a mounting issue.

I was thinking parallax as well. I know that I can adjust my parallax to the point that at 100 yards the cross hairs move 2-3" around on the target. All of my scopes have parallax adjustment, so if this one doesn't not sure what the answer maybe.

What he's described doesn't sound like a mounting issue. I aggree. My thoughts were that possibly a mounting issue helped kill the scope Drop

I know some people like them and have had good luck using them, but I had several go bad and just stopped using them altogether.. But with that said,,, the SML does put a hurt on any scope and I've seen other manufacturers scopes die out as well... I've never killed a Nightforce or a Vortex...

I just bought one to put on my new Apex conversion when I get it back from Jeff I've got one that has been on a custom lightweight .300 Wby Mag, a NULA SML, a Hankins SML, a Rem700ML SML, and a Savage 210F with 738gn handloaded solids. That scope has endured a beating over the last 15 years. Leupold, like Vortex, has a great warranty and people regularly use both of them. Hopefully, you don't have to.

I have used a Nikon omega 3-9x40, a Nikon prostaff 5 3.5-14x40 xr with custom turrets, a vortex crossfire, and a vortex viper hp 4-16x44 on my two smokeless muzzleloaders. I over tightened the rings down on the vortex crossfire and broke the scope vortex warrantied it out and it sits on a 30-06 now. I have not had another issue with any of the other scopes other than the scope sliding in the rings with my vortex viper hp.
I'm still fairly new to assembling rifles (I'm not a builder) but I did learn the hard way when mounting a scope. Get yourself a Wheeler scope mounting kit and make sure you toqure the scope down according to manufacturer specs and I bet that will solve most of your issues.
Nikon might not hold up after tons of abuse which is why my Nikon prostaff 5 sits on a 243 now.
Honestly I feel the 30mm tubes are the way to go for the smokeless muzzleloader game. Good luck.

Yeah, I'm not really concerned about the Leupold. I've got several of them, and except for a couple others, they're about all I've used for the last 35 yrs. or so.
The only one I've ever had a problem with was a VARI-X III 1.75 - 6E x 32, and that was due to it taking a 20 ft. Swan Dive out of my climbing stand, along with my mod. 7 Rem...... But we won't talk about that one

I used the Vari X-III 1.75-6x on a .350 Rem Mag for a number of years. I really liked that one but seeing the end of the barrel through the optic at low power drove me nuts.
