Well are range opened up today so I jumped at the chance to test RL 23. I new it was going to take less powder so I started off with 61.5grs and went up to 63.5grs. Well 61.5grs was the sweet spot and it went 2910fps right were my RL25 gr load of 64.5 grs. AS I went in powder charges with RL23 the groups opened up and at 63.0grs the bolt started to produce a slight click at the top so it was time to quit.
Here again 61.5grs produce a 3 shot group at 100 yards that was actually below .100 I will try that load at 1,000 yards but I will also load some at 60.5grs and 61.0grs just to see what shoots best at 1,000 yards. If you want to shoot small groups at that distance you have to shoot and tune at 1,000 yards not 100 yards. 100 yards does tell you that the gun will shot at that distance which is always encouraging but it just doesn't ever seem to hold up when you go long.

Waiting to see your results with my old favorite H1000 if you try it.

It possible that I might try H1000 but after shooting RL25 and cleaning the barrel it looked like it was not burning as clean as I like. RL23 cleaned up better than RL25. H1000 would be in the same boat as RL25. I am not looking for the highest velocity only the best consistent accuracy. RL23 is popular at our 1,000yrd range in the 300WSM with 215gr Berger's
I might even drop back to RL16 if RL23 doesn't group small enough .I use RL16 in my 300wsm and it is very consistent. RL16 will take less powder but its bulker than RL23 so it will fill the case pretty well. The least amount of powder the longer the barrel is going to last. I have almost 100 rounds down the barrel now the throat still looks really good.
I hope to do another test Tuesday evening at 1K and see what it will do.

Thats pretty incredible, albeit at 100 yards. Hope those results hold up at 1000.
WAs the RL23 test with the 190 hybrid?

Yes all tests so far are focused on the 190gr Hybrid. But I have a few boxes of the very first Hornady 162 National match with the big long aluminum tips. They are longer than the 190gr Hybrid. I is a outstanding long range killing bullet we have killed numerous deer from 800 to 1100 yards and every bullet has blown apart killing the deer almost instantly.
These 162gr Hornady's must have a BC as high or higher than the 190gr because they are the flattest shooting bullet I have ever had. I shoot these out of my 7 STW with the 36 inch barrel over 3500fps but sometimes they would blow up about 50 feet out with a real puff or dust so I had to slow them down to keep them together I think I will give them a try in this 7/300wsm but keep the velocity below 3,000fps and see how they shoot on paper at 1k.

The 162 national match sounds like an ideal bullet for the 7mm diameter. I'm assuming they're out of production. Bummer. Sounds like they really fly out of the STW. And you've found maximum velocity. LOL
Looking forward to hearing how they fly out of the 7/300
