I have been shooting Parker BE 275 gr bullets . They are very accurate . I ordered some veggie wads and tried with and without . Without was better . I was only shooting at 50 yds . I looked for the bullets in the ground but they must disintegrate.So what bullets have you shot deer with and the results ? I think a bullet with a thicker wall jacket would be better. I have heard fury has thicker walls . I don't know about Pittman . I know they need to be thinner to size them though. Thank you in advance ! I guess I am hooked now . This is so much fun . Don't know if I will ever shoot my other muzzleloaders again !

You definitely need to give Pittman Bullets a try you WILL NOT be disappointed. 275 AccuMax is extremely accurate and will make the deer take a dirt nap every time.
You will love them IMO

The 278 Accumax Hardcore would be my bullet of choice.

Fury’s are bonded same thickness jacket as Kyle’s Hardcores I believe. Both bullets should preform considerably better than Parkers. Kyles will have a higher BC. Fury’s are cheaper. The 40 in a sabot no sizing easy to get to shoot well enough for deer. You want smallest group then go smooth form.

My scout seems to like the 275 gr. bullets better than the 250's in the limited testing Iv'e done so far.

Killed 2 this year with the Parker BE 275 and had great results.Left one heck of a blood trail

I have been trying different bullets to find this gun's best load, and I have a ways to go to be sure about it. shooting a scout conversion and it seems 275's in any brand are doing best with 4198 so far. I also think my lead sled may need some modification to fit this gun better where the buttpad fits into the rubber pocket on the sled.

I have had my best groups so far with parker BE 275 and fury star tip 2's in 275, wool wads and 56 gr. h4198. I don't know what was causing my horizontal stringing today though, it's got me scratching my head.

I use a 12x12 inch towel in the back of sled. Set towel over the rear and push gun down into rear opening. Snugs up the rear stock.

thanks buckstuds. I'm thinking I might have a little copper fouling up by the muzzle, but I'm not sure. I may work that area over with some butch's bore shine and a brass brush.

Also forgot, I stopped using weight in mine. I also pull the gun backwards into sled and shoulder and downward at the same time. Groups shrunk up right away and no more broken scopes. I have been doing this for three years with all my guns.

Since sabotless has some significant advantages over saboted shooting, I believe saboted shooting is frequently not considered for certain situations where the advantages may be advantageous. This is especially true if the shooter entered smokeless MLer arena shooting sabotless. Even reduced loads may be helpful at times. For 200-250 yards, with 2500-2530’/sec (195BARNES and 200SST) , the 37g VV110/209 out of a 26” 45 barrel, provides single digit ESs and virtually zero temp sensitivity, has very light recoil, is well sub MOA and kills deer readily. For hunting out to 250 yards, I can see no real advantage by going bore sized. Not saying sabotless is bad, just that I see no advantage in sabotless if the gun has a lighter load requirement such as many break-opens and some retrofits. Saboted , in such circumstances, can provide flatter trajectories, less recoil, still excessive energy, and maybe smaller groups. With the much better bullets now available (Pittman, Fury, etc) and , if desired, much faster loads (straight 4198, duplex loads with H322, 2015, etc ) for up to 2900+’/sec, much flatter trajectories with much less recoil are easily obtainable. Granted, if the break opens were available in 40 cals rather than having 45/70 as a parent cartridge, the answer would be easy - sabotless 40. However, for me, with my retrofit 10ML2/45 cal, saboted does what I want. The 20” twist of the break-opens should handle the 225/228g AccuMaxes and Furys adequately. Saboted shooting still has its place. |

Shooting sabots in your smokeless, how often do you find you need to clean the bore? Is it just as often as traditional BP, or more?

With a quality barrel that has been properly lapped and smooth, you should be able to complete a range session (20 - 30 shots) without cleaning.

I sized Pittman 275 and also Be 275 when loading one handed until I get to last 5" then need both hands very hard once thru that spot one hand to seat. Question is do I need to reset die a little or is that normal. Would think that barrel is not true dia whole length?

Thanks in advance I would clean your barrel and either try a wad(if you aren't using one) or don't size you bullets down so small. I had issues with my scout that every other bullet would load different. 1st shot would be an easy one hand load and the next would be a firm two hand load. I adjusted my smooth sizer to not size the bullet down as far and loading became more consistent. I don't think the powder was burning clean due to under sized bullets on a "clean" barrel. Hopefully others will chime in. |
