I know that this rifle has been converted to shoot as a smokeless muzzleloader. I see the loads suggested for that. CVA with the rifle as a centerfire does not suggest loading over 40,000 psi. That would be around 57 grains of H4198 with a 250 grain bullet. In fact their max load in a lever action is 56.5 grains of H4198 with that bullet. In modern 45-70s which is often considered the Ruger No. 1 and sometimes the Marlin 1895 the max is 60 grains of H4198 with the 250 grain bullet. That gives 44,600 psi and 2607 fps of speed. I see that same firearm with heavier bullets and quite a bit more powder in the SML. I realize .452 bullets are utilized in the SML and have no case but IMO it seems like a pretty stout load compared to a cartridge loading in the same barrel.
I am curious about that. Since this site has a number of the CVA Scout shooters I would welcome their input. I do not think pressure traces were done on those loadings and barrel as compared to the many .45 bolt guns etc.

One of the reasons for the conversations being 40,000 is the plug is larger than a 45-70 case and therefore the barrel is thinner there. Some have shot break action SML far in excess of 40,000 I am not one of them but have thought about it from time to time. I just like that explosion in front of my face to be controlled.

I have a Scout conversion with LRMP ignition and for my load I'm using 55 grains IMR-4198 and a 250 gr Pittman Accumax with a wool wad. From what I can determine from the pressure traces that scat provided on the other page this load should be somewhere between 35,000 - 36,000. hanksmessageboard.freeforums.net/thread/2333/4570-direct-55gr-imr4198-250sst
