I know most of the builds discussed here are for long range shooting and hunting, but was just wondering if anyone else here might be a Treestand / woods hunter also.
If so I'd be interested in hearing about your set-ups, loads etc.. I pretty much only woods hunt now where my shots are <150 yds, more typically 20 - 50 yds.. I'm currently using my savage ml 10-II with 43 gr. 5744 / 300 XTP's & MMP short black sabots.
Not sure what I'll be using with my new Apex conversion when it's finished, but most likely a single powder load of 5744 or N-110 / 195 Barnes / HLBS. I'll probably only be looking to achieve 2100 - 2300 fps or so for my needs.

I do not shoot SML yet, however I can tell you that I have a Begara Encore Barrel which I load with BP 209 and it is deadly at short range. I think you will be very pleased with the accuracy of your new setup. I myself look forward to having Jeff build a SML for me. Good luck.

I been shooting 55 grains of IMR 4198 from the Apex conversions and getting great accuracy. Speed is around 2300 if I remember correctly. You can load it down as far as to 12 grains of powder and get 650 FPS. so anywhere in between that should be pretty doable.

YB i have 2 Hankins converted break opens #1 is an H&R buffalo classic 29" barrel i shoot 56 grns of 4198 not sure on FPS with a light knurled parker 275 be my longest kil is 185 DRT. Gun is zeroed at 200 it will shoot a 2" group at 300 if i do my oart. #2 is an Encore with a Bergarra barrel 24" I run 54 grn of 4198 under either a 250 BE, or a sized 225 ftx or a sized 250 ftx. the encore with hit a 4in plate all day long at 200 yrds. Haven't played with it for really good for groups .at 200 or three hundred gun was assembled quickly for hunting season . One other note both guns have rather inexpensive glass , #1 nikon prostaff 3x9 #2 has hawke 3x9 ir with parrelex . Hopefully this winter ill play with 300 sst bullets in H&R. One other thing u mite consider is a bullet sizer if your going to get in too this sml thing its addictive ." Shoot one today but don't shoot two cause you'll own another tomorrow"!!!!!
The encore does shoot the 275 very accurate but recoil for me is stout so i just tamed her down some. As everyone can see im a breakopen guy , just never owned a bolt action gun ....... but that is not to far away i hope. welcome again and i know you will enjoy jeffs work

I hunt thick swampy woods. Most of my shots are almost bow range, But Im in a smokeless state. I shot Blackhorn in my Sav-pac. Now my main gun is a knight (again) mountaineer. Seems i shoot something different every year, but its usually over 100 grn charge

My main woods/treestand gun is a Knight Ultra-Lite with 90 grs. vol. of BH209 and a 275 BE. Drops them in there tracks!

My hunting mostly consists shorter ranges. I do all my hunting off the ground. I have a Sav/Pac .45 I load 35gr. VV n110,HLBS,.40 200gr. SST. I admit I am pretty careful about shot placement ,but so far has not let me down. I feel very confident with this load out to 200 yds. On a 80 or 90 yd. shot last week through through ribs pass through minimal meat damage never took a step. The load shoots well to 250 on paper for me in perfect conditions but I wouldn't trust it further than that personally.

Appreciate the info guys, it's always interesting to see what other folks are using. Coming to the .45 from my .50 Cal. Savage presents quite a different set of challenges, or maybe better said, opportunities, regarding bullet selection.
Prior to switching back to short range .50 cal. load this yr. of 43 gr. 5744 / 300 XTP / & MMP short black sabot, I previously had the Savage set up for some longer range hunting with 44gr 4759 & 275 gr. BE's due to some farmland / fields that I used to hunt. I no longer have access to that property and am back to strictly woods hunting again, hence my switching loads back to the 5744 / 300 XTP's.
I did however use the 4759 / 275 BE combo at those woods ranges the year before last in the .50 Savage and took a 6 pt. and an 8 pt., both 25 yd. broadside rib shots without hitting any heavy bone, and it didn't tear them up too bad at those speeds (guessing 2100-2200 fps), which is a big concern for me. But from viewing some of the kill pics online, I feel the BE's will be too destructive for my needs when encountering heavy bone at shorter ranges.
So, I'm going to be looking for a less frangible bullet for the .45 (probably .40 cal w/ sabot) that I can run @ 2100 - 2300 FPS using a single powder charge. That's why I'm looking at the 195 Barnes currently.
Appreciate any more info y'all would care to share.

The 200 SST and 195 Barnes both have worked well for us and for what you want. No problems with either bullet, the SSTs are slightly more accurate but the Barnes just a bit stronger bullet but I would not hesitate to use either.

I hadn't looked into the 200 SST much as I know the 250 SST's had some fragmenting issues, at least early on anyways, but I'd imagine 200's are a different animal and have also had quite a bit of refinement since the early bullets. I'll take a closer look at them, appreciate the info.

Just a side note, if you find a satisfactory load with the N110, it is a very clean burning powder. Much more so than 5744

Ive shot over 15 hundreds rounds of 40 or 42gr of 5744 with 200gr xtp's , noslers , and even cheap rainiers with never a problem and all of them making same hole groups from two different rifles but the barnes or sst's I have to knurl the crap out of them to get them to work but with a slower powder I dont. I think its the rounded edges on the base of the bullet. The H.I.S. is such I good ignition system I would probly go with the slower powders that work with the barnes if thats what you want to shoot. You could even drop 4198 down to the 45 or 50gr range if the accuracy is there and you want less speed for close range work. |

Ive never backed down N120 very far but 56gr and a 200gr SST feels like a cream puff load in my heavy SavPac. That load is still pretty fast compared to 56gr of 4198. IIRC its close to 200fps faster.
You should have no problem getting 2100fps in a 45 with N110 and its more temp stable than N120. Both the VV powders work fantastic in my NULA 50cal.

N110 at 35gr with .40 200gr SST in a HLBS should be 2300-2400 fps depending on the gun. Just for an idea.
