jimbob,
I don't clean it very often, maybe every 25 or 30 shots. it shoots better fouled. When I do clean it, I use Boretech Eliminator with just patches and maybe a nylon brush. I'll clean out my breech more often. Others will chime in that have more experience.

Sorry for the double post must of fat fingered the button I got rid of the extra post... If you are the original poster you can go back in a delete your post if you double posted it by mistake. You can also edit its original content by clicking on the edit button on the right side of the screen. Now to give my answer to the question.. I am very guilty of not cleaning enough. I will shoot my gun a lot (20-40 times) before cleaning it. I sometime go get it to make a quick shot at a ground hog or unlucky crow that lands in the back field and I have to really push the bullets down that would ordinarily slide down the muzzle with one hand. But I do like to brake in a new barrel. Still I am not real picky about the procedure except I don't shoot continuous rounds with out cleaning,, 5 to 10 shots is max on a new barrel, then I remove the plug and clean with Butch's bore shine or Montana extreme... Both are good cleaners as is most. Do this two or three times with a good quality barrel, and I think you are good to go.... Thanks Jeff.

I usually only clean with bore cleaner once a year. I will take the breech plug out and run a boresnake through the barrel every 2 or 3 outings to clean it a little.

Like most I don't clean very often but If you let your gun sit for a while the powder residue will harden. on most of my guns best accuracy comes after it is well fouled, on some 2 shots, others, 6-8.
I use Bore Tech Eliminator for copper and good ole Kroil along with a alcohol patch to end. seems that Kroil always gets some the others leave behind and so for the others..

Since I put roughly 30 shot a week down my barrel, I clean every week. This consists of a wet patch initially with Montana Extreme or Butches's Bore Shine followed by one dry patch. I then wet a brass 20ga. brush and run it in/out three or four times followed by another wet patch and one dry one.........then I put J-B on a patch and short stroke it in and out a few times.......turn the patch and re-do the same procedure the one or two short stroked wet patches followed by a couple of dry ones. Oh, and yes, I use a bore guide since I am cleaning from the muzzle. The rod never touches the crown. As far as the breech plug?........I remove the set screw holding the bushing in and wire brush and re anti-seize it. I then run a 5/32 drill bit in from the primer end until it hits the bushing (as hard as the bushing is, a HHS drill bit will not effect it. I also run a bit somewhat smaller than the "C" drill bit in to remove any carbon build up in the primer pocket itself. A shot of compressed air tells me the bushing hole is clear and no drilling dust remains. I also keep the channel on the side of the bolt lubricated as that screw that comes in from the right side of your Rem. action rides and cams in this slot. On a CF I always put lube on the back side of the bolt lugs. Both are under pressure when you close the bolt. Another good habit to get into is grabbing your scope and twisting it to make sure it has not loosened............Been there and gotten bit by not doing so! Richard
