Well it was a fun day I had not planned on going hunting today but a friend on mine called me about 10:30 this morning and said they have a buck bedded down and they can't reach him with his 308 Norma. They shot at him bedded down behind some trees and couldn't see where the bullets were hitting. There was snow on the ground and sometimes you can't pickup the bullet impact. He asked if I would bring my .338 up to see if we could kill that buck so I loaded my stuff and headed to the mountain.
The buck was still bedded in the same spot when I got there so I setup my portable bench and glasses and they put me on the deer. I got the gun out on the bench and put the clicks on for 1175 yards and left my friend Lewis shot the buck since he found it and had been shooting at it with no success. Conditions were pretty good the wind was blowing but not to bad. The buck was bedded behind a big tree which covered most of his body put once in a while he would stretch his head and neck out just far enough for a shot we rarely get a wide open broad side shot here in the mountains of Pa. I knew if he hit him it would be a instant kill. The first shot was dead on for elevation put the big 300gr bullet hit the big tree the deer didn't move Lew reloaded and I put 2moa of right wind on and the second shot hit the buck in the back of the head and exited out the jaw on the far side dead deer right then and there. So tomorrow we have a fresh gut pile to hopefully draw in a bear since its the last day for bear in my area.
The .338 is a great long range caliber I have made many kills with the 300gr SMK and it is really doing well in the Edge. The buck was shot on the middle mountain side about half way up. These are strictly big woods mountain deer no corn fields or soy are here. Don't why some pictures won't rotate no matter what I try.
