She used a 300 blackout pistol off a rest and was grouping about 2” at the range at 100 yards. The deer was shot at about 60 yards. The first deer she shot at was at 50yards. The first we could not find hair or blood at deers location when she shot. We followed tracks for 50 yards and found a pin head sized drop of blood. We tracked in a cut alfalfa field 150 yards further that night very difficult tracking we quit at midnight. The next morning we were able to get another 100 yards. We never found where it left the field. The largest drop of blood was not larger than a pea. The blood was very light in color. I do not believe this hit was a heart-lung hit. Without finding the animal I cannot say where it was hit. This started some questions in my mind as to the effectiveness of the load Samantha was using. That evening no shots presented themselves the next morning a doe gave her the opportunity and she dropped the deer on the spot. After walking up on the deer I could see the reason for having so little sign a shot location on the prior deer. She was shooting Lehigh Defense Controlled Chaos Bullets 115 Grain Fracturing Copper Hollow Point. The successful “Huntress” I think if we use the same gun next year I want a bullet that makes as large of exit as possible. Yes it is probably the smallest doe we have ever shot. She was more than willing to take a fawn. She just wanted to get a deer. She was happy an so was I.

110 tac x barnes are fantastic. Shot several at about 200 they did their job every time.

110 tac x barnes are fantastic. Shot several at about 200 they did their job every time. Are the animals easily tracked? My reason for the post is with the combination she was shooting in my belief is a poor choice of bullet for my use. I want something that gives me the best chance to find the animal with a marginal hit. These bullets give little to follow. I like the recommendations of using the Barnes bullet and will be looking closely at using next year if Sam is shooting the Blackout again.

Glad to see she got her deer! That looks like one happy hunter! Yes she was. Still have my concerns about it being enough gun. I know I was even warned. Hopefully these pictures can help those looking to use the Blackout on game choose there projectile better than I did.

All the deer that I have killed with the 110 tac x all expired very quickly. I dont recall any of them going more than 50 yards. That being said shot placement is key and some deer just want to live no matter what they get hit by. I have had very good luck with the 110 tac x bullets.

1qw23er4 Couldn’t agree more on needing good shot placement. Just want a bullet that I can have more confidence in. If she would have made a liver hit with the LeHigh I doubt we would have found the deer if it headed to cover.

I have had good performance out of the 110 Barnes Tac x bullet. +1 on the Barnes 110 Gr Tac “X” Bullet. Are you getting 2,400 FPS?

Joel Very happy hunter, we can tell by the pictures!
while it's easy to second guess? my thoughts are the blackout is very low on the totem pole as a deer caliber, the Barnes is likely your best bet though. I know a few that have found the Blackout very under powered at anything over 100 yards and many experience just what you did, no exit and no blood. I still believe the 6.8 SPC to be the best kid/female friendly deer getter out there, low recoil, accurate and it hammers deer, I carry it myself anytime I'm in the woods during the gun season, I'm sure the Barnes will perform much better in the BO but you might want to rethink the caliber, I know others will disagree but JMO.
Happy hunting for you and your Daughter, enjoy it, they get too big for Dad in a hurry!

Along with the barnes vote, check and see what the nosler 125 gr. ballistic tips will do in the 300 blk. The issue with the 6.8 is that I haven't seen one in pistol length. I know you're hampered by the length issue. You could always have a gunsmith cut down a 16" barrel. Also the 350 legend seems to hold velocities well in shorter barrels. that might be an option. Will let you know how it performs shortly. Probably gonna take it on my excursion north. If not will see what it does during Ohio season.
Still kills me that you're allowed to use basically whatever in a handgun up there, but no rifles. One of my friends up there uses a 30-06 encore handgun. LOL Doesn't seem to make sense... Gotta love the DNR. Darned Near Retarded

The pistol length is an issue we hunt in a slug zone. She might get a chance to shoot another in a couple weeks with Barnes bullets. I am planning on getting her a 350 rifle upper this summer and possibly a 350 pistol. If she or I can kill a deer with the 300 and Barnes maybe I can get some confidence in the load. I have also been told to try the Winchester 150gr load.

Ok Bill more research done and yes the 6.8SPC dose have better ballistics than the 300BLK by a considerable margin. I will be looking into the cartridge further.

The 150 gr in the 350 seems to be pretty nice. Also, Hornady has developed a 165 gr ftx that may be a winner as well. With the 6.8, I've looked long and hard for a handgun length upper with no results. I'm starting to think that you'd have to get one cut down. SOTA up there in MN has some decent deals if you're serious about it. $270 for a complete upper assembly with 16" SS barrel. I've been restraining myself so far... sotaarms.com/joomshopping/product/view/2/6
