Rem/Brux .45 sabot less……………
Last week I made a comment that most folks only post a single good group rather than putting on numerous groups of the same load to see what they consistently do? So, my buddy Scott………schunter said: Maybe I should do that……..so I did! And this was with the 250 TEZ and the 8/62 Clays/H-4198 duplex.
To get the squeaky clean barrel fouled I fired three shots with a 10/60 duplex and the 250 XTP at 100 yards—Target #1. Aside from the very first shot, the succeeding two shots nestled nicely together! I then loaded up a 250 TEZ and went to the 300 yard gong striking it at the right elevation but to the far right side. A scope adjustment was made and the second sighter went center mass where it was aimed. At this point, I proceeded to shoot four three shot groups with that load. Last week I had a nice 1.5” three shot group on the gong.
First target #2 produced a decent 2.8” group fairly centered. Average velocity for those shots was 2885 with a 4 fps ES
Note: all my loads are thrown with two powder measures. A Lyman 55 for the Clays and a Harrell’s for the 4198. None are scaled except for adjusting the measure.
The second group #3….Hmmm This group moved out to the left and opened to 4.8”. Still the average velocity was 2880 and the ES was 3.
The third group #4 was also off to the left and shot #3 just grazed the side of the target frame with a 5.8” group average vel. Of 2860 and a ES of 20.
The fourth and final group #5 had an average velocity of 2856 but with an ES of 3. Aain, the group went off to the left and measured 5.6”. Not what I was hoping for? Good conditions, good trigger pulling I felt? Sometimes it is what it is? Great Extreme Spreads which would seem to indicate the groups should have been better than they were? The average group size for all four was 4.7”, average velocity was 2864 fps and the average Extreme Spread was 7.5 fps. The third group opening up that ES from 3 to 7.5 fps. I almost felt like initially, I should not have adjusted the scope after shooting the gong……….at least it would have kept most of the groups more centered, but of course would have done nothing for the group size.
While at 300 yards I decided to throw a few 290 TEZ’s down range with the same 8/60 duplex. Here the velocity for three shots (#1 did not register) averaged 2743 with a 2 fps ES but a terrible 6” four shot group!
For my last group I went with the 275 Ballistic Extreme (I bit the bullet and shot some of the “higher” dollar bullets) I use a 5/65 –4759/H-4198 duplex. Got an average velocity (five shots) of 2811 fps with a larger 32 fps ES……………….However, the group shrunk dramatically with the first four going 1.2” and the fifth making it 1.8” for five shots at 300 yards.
Conclusion?
? I have had days when the 290 TEZ’s performed well and the same for the 250’s? It looks like on this date, the 275 Parker BE’s won the best group. I guess its nice to have that “Go To” load when you need it but for me, shooting as much as I do, I can’t justify blowing 25 to 35 shots every week with bullets that cost that much so, when I do apples to apples, it generally needs to be “generic to generic!”
I just completed another build with a Rem. ML action and a Shilen barrel. It has a brake on it that Elkman made me for Christmas (he does nice work) (he even made me a nice powder funnel to go with it). Airbornike fit the barrel for one of Luke’s breech plugs and I installed the brake. Only a few shots were fired to get on paper with some 250 SST’s giving me a .6 three shot group. Two 300 gr. SST’s were sent down range at Bill’s clean target and they impacted about 2.5” apart. Herman took a shot to see how he liked the brake?? And now I am going to put one on his ML this week.
Thanks for the brake and funnel Carl and Mike for the quick turn around time on the barrel work. Carl was nice enough to sell me an “extra Shilen barrel” he happen to have collecting dust in his “20,000 sq. ft. shop” (private joke)
