Well I did some load testing today and this is what I found. In my Tromix 458 Socom 1-10” twist 10.5” barrel a load consisting of a 250gr Monoflex and 36.3gr of H-110 was what I decided on for my deer load. Accuracy was 1” at 100 yards.
In my 10.5” Bear Creek Arsenal 300Blk upper my coyote load came out to be a 110gr V-max 20.4gr H-110 it shot about 1-1/4. I also found a deer load for the squirt. Her deer load this year will consist of a 115gr Lehigh Controlled Chaos with 19.5gr of H-110 it shot about 1-1/2” at 100 yards.
Now I can concentrate on a couple things I want to do with my smokeless muzzleloaders I want to get done. I thought this might be of interest to some.

These guns open up an entire new chapter in sporting arms to me. Love it.

I’ve got a 10 year old that wants me to take her hunting this year now that she is finally old enough to hunt deer in MN. Configured as as pistol she can handle it way better than any shotgun and it’s legal in our slug zone. If I do any walking in nasty stuff I might carry it configured as a 458 Socom. I would have loved to of had it 15 years ago when I walked a lot of cattails. Now I’m more likely to let them walk out and shoot them with the SML. My body just doesn’t agree how much fun it is to go in and kick them in the rear then shoot them. The options are almost endless and they are very easy to adapt to whatever you need them to do.

We have two 300 Blackout AR’s built with all the same parts with 16” Ballistic Advantage barrels and both shoot under 3/4 inch at 100 yards. One shoots Hornady 110 gr. V-Max and other shoots Hornady 208 gr. A-Max. Unfortunately, one will shoot the 110 gr. great but will not group the 208 gr. at all. Same with the other AR. Not sure why both act that way but it is what it is. I was planning to reload but I’m supper happy with the results. Good thing that they are different colors.

Sasquatch killed hid first deer when he was 6 with an AR that I purpose "rebuilt" for him to hunt with, Tennessee legalized the use of .223 on deer a year or two before. I started off with a bushmaster I already had and bought an 8 twist 18" barrel to replace the 20" 9 twist, thinking was to shoot the Barnes 70 grain TSX and it did shoot that bullet very well over 24.5 grains of Varget. I also added an adjustable butt stock so I could make it fit him. I already had a really good trigger installed, we practiced a good bit and he laid a big doe to rest that year, also killed some in the years following with the same load and gun, dad killed a few as well but I never really liked the smallish exit holes thus the move to the six 8.
The AR is the perfect gun for a child, low recoil, very adjustable and they think they are cool.

Sounds like a great load for the kid to hunt with. Haven't seen the Lehigh Controlled Chaos bullets in action. FWIW... A very good friend of mine had his boy out in the Michigan youth season with a 300 Blk. He nailed an 8 pt buck @ last light. The blood trail was non-existent, so they waited until the morning to trail the buck. For those of you who haven't seen the cedar swamps in the U.P. visual distance is measured in feet not yards. By the time they got to the buck, this is what the coyotes left... I don't know what his load was, and the buck only went about 60 or 70 yards. Make sure you get an exit wound. LOL You know your stuff, so I'm not concerned. Just hope you have less thick vegitation. LOL

joel,
I wish I'd been able to use the straight-walled rounds here in Ohio 10 years ago. Still can see the monster 10 point that ran off unscathed by my smooth-bore 12 gauge. That one haunts me. LOL
Had 2 opportunities at 4+ yr old bucks in 9 days in 2010. Killed the smaller one, missed the big one. Go figure... The one I got was a 130" 9 point in the U.P. Dandy for the area - only mature buck I've ever seen up there in a LOT of years of hunting the area. Had a 160 get away in Ohio. If I'd had my 357 max, .444, .450, etc... LOL It's the what-ifs that keep us coming back.

Do you know what bullet they were shooting? Hopefully sShe can shoot the 458socom accurately but if not blackout it is. We hunt pretty open ag land. I have seen less than that on deer left overnight here. I am by no means saying the blackout is a good deer cartridge but it might be the best option for her that I have access to and is legal. I hope straight wall cartridges become legal in MN she will start shooting 357 Ledgend rifle.

Open ag land will help. The parts of MN I've seen were pretty open. Spent a week hunting up in the Morris area in 2016. Most of that was open ground, with a lot of cattails and brush along the rivers. That was a new experience. If your area is anything like that you'll have a lot less trouble finding deer. LOL
My buddy said they were using barnes vortex ammo. Just didn't have the velocity to give much expansion. The 115 lehigh should do better.
Controlled expansion monolithic bullets and the 300 blk don't tend to dump much energy. The lehigh rounds should give you multiple secondary wound channels and a quicker kill.
Will be interested to see the results.

I will certainly update hopefully with photos. The LeHigh certainly look to me to be the best option for the 300Blk and deer. Time will tell I guess. I hope one gets wacked with the 458 and 250gr monoflex projectiles. Morris is similar ground. Those small scattered cattails makes the SML shine. It will be a couple years before she carries one of them though. She will be using bow stands and encouraged to shoot the first deer that gives her a good shot. He goes wiggy for venison have pictures of he no nothing but a diper covered in blood on one end of the table while we processed on the other end. She sat at the bone pone pile examining.

Thats awesome. Glad she's that big into the process. Love seeing kids who are excited to hunt.
Don't want to an idiot, just trying to pass on the info I have. I've always leaned a bit towards overkill in my hunting career... My 1st deer killed with a rifle (all 4 that season) were shot with a 30-06. To be fair I was 17 yrs old and hunting out of state for the first time. It was an improvement over shotguns. Didn't go below 7mm as a primary rifle until I was almost 40.
I'm kinda in the same situation. Have a couple nephews that are rapidly approaching hunting age. I'm hoping I'm adequately armed. LOL

Information is never a bad thing. My first firearms deer was shot with a 30-40kreg. I shot it 3 times threw chest an hit twice more. It didn’t stop till I broke 3 legs I swore that would never happen again. Worked to earn enough to buy a 35 Whelen the next summer. Never have I thought I have had too much gun. Wrong Bullets a few times but never too little gun.

Well the squirt got a doe this morning with the 300. I have mixed feelings. The deer dropped on the shot. It was an adult doe with fawn but I think I have shot fawns nearly as big. She is happy and proud and that was the goal. I will post pictures after getting it skinned.
