I was lucky enough to draw a Colorado bull elk tag with a muzzleloader this fall. The rules state that I can’t use smokeless powder and the gun has to be 50 cal minimum, no sabots are allowed. I will be shooting a savage ml 2 with blackhorn 209 powder and open sights per the rules. Does anyone have any suggestions on a bullet that will perform well on elk at bh 209 speeds (probably about 95gr by weight) ?

Fury, he has a 50cal bonded bullet that should work well. PM Dino on this board, he makes them.

I tried full bore Thor bullets but not Fury. I shot them in my ml2 and didn't get good groups, but I didn't use a wad. I would say with either of the two bullets a wool wad would benefit you.

I’ve never used the Thor “One Size Fit All” but have used the Bore specific bullets with Great Success. They work well at BH 209 velocities & if your 10 ML-II has a tighter Bore. You might try: 92.0 Grs of BH 209 by Weight .501” 250 Gr Tipped Thor Federal 209A Primer The Fury with wads work well also, I just prefer the All Copper Mono bullets for Hunting. Congratulations on your Draw & Good Luck!

Turns out the bore on my savage is pretty big. Dennis sent me some 325 star tips that I thought would need to be sized to fit but they were actually still a little loose on a clean barrel. I was itching to try some anyway so I went to the range. After 5-6 shots the loading pressure seemed to level off. It still only takes one hand to seat the bullet but they shot pretty well. I ended up using 90gr of BH209 by weight and a .060 veggie wad. I didn't shoot for a group at 100 yards since I was making adjustments but after I was comfortable with the sights I moved the target out to 200 yards. At 200 yards I was able to shoot a 4"-5" group, which I am pretty happy with considering I and very new to open sights.
