The guy who made my dies also makes my root jacket that I draw down to .458" and swage into bullets. He has decided making jackets is not profitable and is not going to make any more. Right now he has 78K of the size I use and is selling them at a pretty good discount. Some outfit that makes .416 and .408 bullets had the capital to buy all of that size when he told them he was shutting down the jacket operation. I don't have the capital to buy 78K worth of jackets and this project was more of a venture to cut my cost in shooting than to start a full time business since I have a full time job. Maybe when I retire it will become that but when I asked what it would cost to make my own jackets (guilding metal not copper tubing) he estimated $22K for the press and dies.
If anyone is interested, what I am proposing is that I give you his contact info and you can buy your jackets at the discount price. When you want bullets from me (if you want them at all) you can mail me your jackets and I will swage them and deduct the original, full cost of the jackets as I calculated them when I bought them prior to his closeout. I am suggesting this because I am not sure how long this supply will last and how many I can afford to buy before they are gone.
Originally, when I got into this several board members offered to invest in this project to help get me off the ground (thanks gents) but I declined because I don't want to get into a situation where guys have invested money and don't see it back quickly or equitably. In my eyes this is a better solution, sort of like buying primers and powder that sits on your shelf until you need it, than donating money to me on good faith.
The way he has them priced right now you get 1200 jackets for the same price as I have been paying for 1000 jackets. Now they are $175 for 1200 jackets but if y'all are interested I will see if we can do a group buy for a better discount. Long and short is if I buy jackets and make bullets they cost $2.00 per bullet vice $2.35 for a Parker MH. If you buy the jackets the bullets will cost $1.75 per.
Does this pass the sniff test or does anyone have a better suggestion?
