Some comparisons…………
A beautiful day for shooting……….58* and clear with no wind. .45 Rem/Brux, Arrowhead plug and .028” bushing. ALL bullets shot today could be seated with one hand at arm’s length. Majority of bullets used (except for the 250 TEZ’s on the lat two groups) were 250 gr. Blem. XTP’s from Midway. .060 veggie wads on all loads. 32X NF scope with 2 oz. Shilen trigger.
I know the results I got could have changed had the bullet been sized for a tighter fit but so be it. This will be apples to apples…….good or bad!
On group one I fouled the barrel with a five shot group using the 250 XTP and a 10/60 Clays/4198 duplex. The first three were pretty tight at .490 and even all five at .995. If you look at the velocities, Shot #1 was very slow (cold clean barrel) Shot #2 on the other hand was the highest then 3, 4 & 5 settled in at 2830 with a 3 fps ES.
OK, for the comparisons:
#2…250XTP with 40 gr. of 4227—The first shot at 2139 and the second at 1558 and a 7 ¾” group!
#3…same bullet with 40 gr. of 4759—Not bad at 2257 fps with a 31 fps ES and a .457 two shot group. 2 ½” + and 2 ½” rt. From group #1.
#4 same bullet with 40 gr. of 5744---Only captured one shot at 2165 fps.(forgot to turn the chronograph on for #1) Again not bad……..high and right at .9”
#5 same bullet and 40 gr. of N-110---Large ES (108) and 2297 av. velocity. With a 2.1” group.
#6 same bullet and 30 gr. of Clays---Av. vel. Of 2207 with a 40 fps ES. First shot 5” right and 1.5” high….shot 2 was 5” + and 1” rt.
#7 same bullet and 30 gr. of Red Dot. This combo gave the highest vel.: 2401 and the lowest ES of 8 fps. But the group was still almost 3”….Not to good.
The above just gives you an idea of velocities obtainable under the conditions I shot them. If I was looking for a light load, the one with 4759 is the one I would pursue based on the limited testing I did. Take from this what you will?
#8 was a duplex I wanted to play with (8/62 Clays/H-4198) (250 XTP) and put five down range at 2916 fps with a decent 8 fps ES. Here again as I have experienced in the past, two groups. No rhyme or reason? 3 = .6 and all five in 1.5
#9 was the same duplex with a 250 FTX. Similar velocity but larger ES. Group wise it had the first three in .133” Shot #4 I think I was a bit quick on the 2oz. trigger but it opened the group to .563”. Including shot #1 the group was now 1.1” Damn Democrats!
#10 was the same duplex using the 250 Barnes TEZ. Velocity (2863) a bit slower but ES still good at 14 fps. Group wise not so good at 1.2
“ for only three shots.
#11 was the same combo as above only shot at 300 yards. Velocity and ES comparable to the above and based on the 100 yard group results, the 300 yard group of 3.1” for five and 2.1” for three kind of corroborated the 100 yard findings. I am thinking that I need to size these bullet a little on the tighter side. This is the loosest I have shot them. I actually think the slight pressure I am feeling when seating is the veggie wad.
Note: Loads #6 and #7 are on the warm side and I would refrain from using them..........They are also not accurate. Richard
