.45 Rem/Brux sabot less
• Cloudy and damp with no wind.
• Started with two foulers shots: 250 XTP with 10/60 Clays/H4198 for 2821 and 2817 fps.
• Today was one of those days with a lot of mixed results, note of which were good, so to speak?
• As Riverrat was interested in a light load of 4759 for a top break, I shot a couple 200 FTX’s with 40 gr. of 4759 (2303 fps) and then one with 35 gr. @2037. Surprisingly, all three shot went just under an inch even with 300 fps difference; which shows that at 100 yards they are still flat shooting.
• I started out wanting to shoot Elkman’s load of 70 gr. H-4198 with the 300SST. Results were terrible. Low velocity shots with flames coming out the muzzle on the second shot. Bullet was loose (one hand down) fit and maybe the Win. 209 was not hot enough but abandoned any further testing with that combo.
• For group #2 I used the same 300SST with the 10/60 Clays/4198 load that generally shoots pretty well? Not so today?
My intention today was actually to test the 225 FTX with various combinations to see what I could get to shoot? Results were very mixed.
Group #3 I used the 10/60 Clays/4198 duplex: The first three shots averaged 2898 fps with a 35 fps ES……………….Then shots 4, 5, 6, and 7 averaged 2960 fps with an 11 fps ES?; same lot of bullets and powder loads. I never cooled the barrel but also did not let it get hot, just warm? There was a nice cluster of four out of 7 shots (.407) but the entire group went 2.0”
Next up (group 4)I switched to a 10/60 duplex using 4759 for the booster. Here again, shots 1, 2 and 3 averaged 2918 fps with a 24 fps ES and then shots 4 and 5 averaged 2963 fps with a 6 ES. Three shots in .496 but all five in 1.2” Again, not good?
For #5 I went with 5/65 of 4759 and 4198. Average here was 2903 with a 24 fps ES. Three shots in .913 and all five in 1.9” Not so good?
The last group was with straight 65 gr. of H-4198 which averaged 2677 fps with a 60 fps ES……………3 shots in .900” and five in 1.2”.
I have had days when I got some pretty decent groups with the 225 FTX’s but today was not one of them. Also disappointed with the 10/60 and the 300 SST’s?
Still had a good day of shooting. I just put a new Brux 6mm barrel on my match rifle chambered in 6BRX. I shot some old reloads from the old Brux barrel and after 6 sighters, put together a .217” five shot 100 yard group, so pretty happy with that.
