We went to the store the other night and the shelves were empty of muzzleloading supplies. I have never shoot a powerbelt from a smokeless gun, but I have shoot a few deer with then from a black powder gun. Always had good luck with him on deer, and groups were not too bad either.

Try the 300gr PB Plat and 80-90gr of Blackhorn. They are too tight for my Pacnor barrel but should be ok in a Mcgowen. They shot fantastic for me in my smokers with Blackhorn though.
DONT try them with smokeless.

The Elk in the picture below was taken with a 50cal. 348gr. PowerBelt, shoot real good out of my Knight Disc Extreme but I'm not sure if they would be any good in a smokeless.

Powerbelt story
When I first got my savage MLII I was on a lease with a friend and his wife, they both shot powerbelts from their smokers.
They were set up on some good buck sign and I was about 300 yds up on another Ridge, about an hour after daylight I heard what sounded like a 22 go off.
My friends wife had a good buck at 25 yds under her tree and when she aimed at it she said she heard something hit the ground like a hickory nut, upon firing she blew smoke all over but no bullet exited the barrel, it had separated from the plastic base and fell from the barrel before she fired, needless to say she was very unhappy....

For some reason I'm thinking they (PB's) are a no-go out of these smokeless mz's.

I am with rick59. The powerbelts have their place but I do not think it is with smokeless speeds, at least I did not have success with them in that application.

If you like the way a 300gr platinum power belt performs on game that 55gr of 4198 should work great. Ive shot them at paper with 4759 and they are deadly accurate.

The 45cal 300gr PB Plat performs pretty good at the correct speed. I have no idea of how much speed 80gr of BH209 delivered but the Plat looks like this after shot into media/jugs. When i shot them with 90gr+ they started to come apart. At 100gr+ they were acting like varmint bullets. Retained weight 253.7gr www.rchs61.org/MVI_300plat.m4v

That mushroom looks about perfect. I would think his 55gr of 4198 should be around 1800 to 1900 fps with that bullet and should work good.

Imo powerbelts and any smokeless powder is a bad ideal.

I think the plating is not thick enough for our pressures, I think the engraving may get into the lead and that buildup wouldn't be good for smokeless.

I have found several jackets over the years and they were peeled back in a uniformed mushroom ,I thought there was some other issue for not shooting them as may be the base was not built properly. Heart/lung shots and never lost a deer to 1, I doubt the jacket would be cut unless it was a really hot load or tite barrel unless the base is the issue

I forgot to mention that the platinum have a tougher plating than the copper plated powerbelts.

Never shot them in my .45 but blew the skirt off them in my Savage 50s with book loads of smokeless powder.

I shot the 300gr Powerbelt Aerolites in a 50cal with 40gr of imr 4759 and they made same hole groups.

With smokeless I would use only the platinum or areolites because the gas checks are tougher than their standard bullets. In a 50cal I shot a few groups at 40gr of 4759 with the 300gr aerolites and they shot great but I settled on 35gr because I got the speed I wanted for that type of bullet and the same accuracy.
