I am new to the smokeless world. I am going to have jeff build me a apex conversion and shoot 4198 this year to get started. I am reading about every one using duplex loads. I google and got general info. What is the general purpose behind this practice?

If you check out Richards post's you will get some good comparisons between single loads and duplexing...My take on the advantages or purpose of duplexing is hotter and easier to ignite ,faster burning powder for the booster charge and your slower burning powder as the main charge....Duplex loads have shown to be less effected by cold temperatures as Single loads have with savage plug 209....They also generate a fast spike in pressure which helps in the obturation of copper bullets base into the lands....Check Richards range results and you will learn quickly....He has been load testing for years and posting a new one almost every week....Good luck Duplexing....
With Jeff's ignition system Jeff would be the one to talk to about duplexing with it....Single loads seem to do very well with it....

Particularly solid copper bullets like the Barnes TEZ's seem to like a booster as the single charge does not seem to get them fattened up and grabbing the rifling. With your Apex, you are dealing with a thinner barrel. Duplexing with Clays and RD might not be the best thing unless you use lesser amounts of booster. You may want to use some of the slower boosters like 4759 or N-110. If you will be using sabots and .40 cal bullets, definitely do not use Clays or RD as it will eat up your sabots...........it spikes the pressure too quick for sabots but works great for sabot less. If you got questions, as Jeff or PM me. Good luck with the new rifle!

I would stay with a single powder like the 4198's in the break action guns. These guns with single powders should have no problem killing at 300 yds if the accuracy is there. I would not feel comfortable trying to push one hard, in my opinion they are not heavy enough to be pushed with higher pressure loads like a bolt type gun.

Thanx for the info. Barnes all copper has been by favorite in the rem ultimate. Parker have never let me down.A 275 be at 2100-2400 will be a great conbo for my under 100 yards hunting I do .
