The other day I had planned on shooting my 6.5/284 at 1k with the new 147gr ELD-M bullet with the same load of RL 16 I shoot earlier when the temp was 70deg. I had no problems then but when I shot at the range it was 84deg and now the same load nearly locked the gun up. They say RL 16 is supposed to be extremely stable in all temps I don't agree with that anymore.
So I new if wanted to shoot these bullets and the 150gr SMK in a 1-7 twist barrel I had to change powders. I loaded a string of RL 23 and RL 26 to see how these powders behaved with the heavier bullets. Both the Hornady and the Sierra have a long bearing surface so that can jack the pressure up. At any rate with both RL 23 and RL 26 I could easily get 3000 fps with a good safety margin on the powder charge. When I get the barrel and chamber it I still plan on trying RL 16 and then go to RL 23 I really don't like RL 26 it is a speed powder but it has never produced good accuracy at 1k. RL16 and RL 23 are two powders that shooters are doing well with in a 1K matches.
I got the new 150gr SMK bullets today. They check out pretty good they are long and pointed. I test all my bullets on a Verne Junkie bullet comparator and it does show the differences in the jacket concentricity both the Hornady and Sierra check out good for a production bullet some spin almost perfect the worse are out 4 deviations they claim 5 dev. and under is really good. I don't like to see the needle swing back and forth the less the needle moves the smaller they will group at 1K. At 100 yards you would not see the difference.

Are there any good custom bullets out there for the 6.5 Carl? I guess Clinch River no longer makes bullets? Does Bart make any 6.5's?
