When I bought my Lyman Deerstalker I noticed they sold additional barrels at a very reasonable price. This got me thinking of how easy this could become a versatile rifle much like a T/C Contender. And so I’ve had in mind a barrel and caliber that could be topped with a Malcolm style scope or peep sight where a 175 yd zero could give me a point blank range of 200 yds keeping the +/- less than 5” and preferably 4”.
What I was told by a few people was that with black powder (or subs) that a velocity couldn’t really breech about 2400 fps as it’s just not efficient and can’t use enough powder without an absurd barrel length to make a larger powder charge work.
I had wondered about sleeving a muzzleloader barrel to something like .375” seeing that the Lee bullet has a BC of .250 and thinking this ought to give a respectable trajectory. If nothing else I’ve also contemplated what a .40 cal with an Accurate Molds design could do for me as it would mostly be a medium game getter.
I see that a .45 cal using a sabot and .400 SST would likely give me what I’m after. But I’d prefer not to need a sabot.
I was informed that this forum has people have done such things. Is this a dream or is this a possibility?

Check with Rice barrels for fast twist 45s and maybe even 40s. I know they offer near drop in fast twist 45cal barrels for Hawkens/Renegades.

One that I’ve certainly looked at is Oregon. There’s another as well that escapes my mind at the moment. Another option is to have a barrel lined.
As an aside I also want to obtain a 28-32” barrel to create a 28 ga with and contemplating a screw-in barrel since I can’t seem to find anyone who will jug choke a small gauge. And I think I’d like a shorty barrel (16-18”) in either .50 or .54 with a slow to mid twist or even another 28 ga along with another 24” barrel in .54 with the 1:48” twist my current .50 cal has. A small game caliber (.32-.40) seems a nice thing to have but with a 15/16” barrel its probably be heavier than I’d like.
