Since my first round of testing I bought some new 45/70 brass so I would have the correct length which really amounted to nothing because the CVA Scout V2 has a very short throat which makes you seat the bullet pretty deep in the case. I also bought some 325gr Hornady bullets since this gun really shot them well. My top load was 56 grs of H4198 didn't get to check velocity but accuracy was outstanding. There were not signs of pressure with that load it is slightly a compressed load with the 325gr bullet.
Second test was with the 300gr Barnes originals with 59 grs of H4198 that is also a slightly compressed load. This load shoots really good and the velocity on that load is 2450fps. If the throat was longer in this chamber you probably could run 2500fps . I did get the velocity on the Hornady factory 325gr ammo it went 1910fps the box say's 2,000fps
Boy for a fairly cheap rifle this thing flat out shoots right out of the box. The barrel does not shoot clean once you get a few rounds down the barrel it all comes together so it makes it very simple don't clean it. Anybody wanting a straight wall cartridge gun for Ohio or Iowa this will get the job done. The 450 Bushmaster would probably work really well with the 25" barrel and so would the over looked 444 Marlin which really could be improved with hand loads.

Cabelas in Maine had those on sale for $329 last summer and I took a road trip down there to check them out but wound up buying the Henry steel in 45c because I have an Apex 45-70 and a Henry 45-70. I really like the scout v2 though and will probably buy one if they go on sale again.

Since you have Apex 45/70 your really got the better of the two guns. The Scout V2 doesn't have the adjustable trigger mine is nice and crisp but it could be a little lighter. I had a 50 Cal Accurra V2 a few years ago and that trigger was adjustable and really light but for hunting with gloves on the new Scout trigger is just fine.

I have CVA stalker 45-70 and have loaded 300 grain hornadys and 300 Barnes would like to load some 400 plus harcasts and try them but the throat is so short I couldn't even come close theywoild have been way too deep in case it shoots the 300s great though I wish they would have cut these with a deeper throat the Marlin Chambers I have shot had no problem with long flat nose bullets they just have problems feeding long ammunition

I shot the buck in my avatar with a lee mold 405gr cast bullet and 26gr of imr4579 in my apex and could have stuffed more in the case. Dunno what powder you want to use but with the right burn rate you can use a 405gr bullet. I didn't write it down but I used a lil over 52gr of imr4320 with that bullet also.

I guess I should have stated not that it wasn't possible but that I was loading to the manufacturers spec for Oregon trail 405 wfp and they listed 2.550 oal. And with the large meplat and and ogive very near the end of the bullet coupled with the short throat of this rifle it wasn't gonna happen. I don't trust loading outside of a proven recipe so I wasn't willing to seat the bullet deeper
