A couple months ago, Carlos was kind enough to find me some
245gr Spitfires, and a couple weeks ago, I began attempting
to work up loads for them. Reason for the Spitfires was
partly nostalgic....they were devastating to deer at closer
ranges in the factory 10MLII. Reason for just closer ranges
was that they were not very accurate past 75yds. I was hoping
they would fair better in a .451 barrel.
After reading posts that said good results were had with the
Barnes bullets by sizing them loose, I did so, and got 5-shot
vertical strings of around 2 1/2". Horizontal spread was
not bad at 5/8". So I sized them a little tighter for next
outing. They still went down with one hand, but it took a
little more force.......SHOTGUN patterns!! Same load!
Rifle is a bedded laminate stocked 10MLII with PN .451, 1:22.
The loads were 10/110 - 75/3031, .060 veggie wads, annealed,
full formed Barnes 245gr Spitfires ignited by CCI LRM primers
out of the PR Bullet BP modified for the .030 bushing.
I cannot form them any looser than the original attempt, or
they would fall out of the barrel. Suggestions other than
forget about the Spitfires?
To regain confidence, I sized and shot some 275MH's which
went into the same ragged hole with three shots, so both
scope and rifle are A-OK.
