Well after firing 120 rounds through this little power house I have to say I really like this gun. It is very accurate right out of the box with factory ammo. The Hornady 250gr FTX factory ammo turned up 2150fps out of this short barrel.
I tried several different combinations of powder and bullets and seating depth. I stayed with H110 powder and CCI450mag primers. For a while I sized down the 250gr FTX so I could seat the bullet out further that gave mixed results accuracy was always good but some time deviation was not good so I went back to the standard size bullet and recommended seating depth . Since this is a 3 lug bolt action I new that I could safely increase the powder charge over the AR platform so I worked up the powder charges from 41grs up to 46.5gr of H110. 46.5grs will be slightly compressed. Yesterday I tested 46grs with the 250gr FTX accuracy was outstanding and so was velocity and deviation the best I have seen from a straight wall cartridge this load gave a velocity of 2425fps from a 16" barrel with a standard dev. of only 7fps. I had this gun sighted in 1.5" high at 100 yards and shot our small metal swinger at 220 yards with only a few inches of hold over it is definitely a 200yard plus gun with this 2400fps load. and yet the recoil is still mild.
Final thought if you looking a for a compact light weight accurate deer rifle at a very modest price buy this Ruger I don't think you will be able to find a better deal anywhere in a repeating rifle.

Seems to be a consistent broken record with that gun and caliber. I havent heard of anybody thats not extremely happy with theirs. Glad its working for you.
I have a 460sw barrel on an Encore. Its an MGM barrel, but I cant get it to shoot full power loads worth a crap. MGM even says on their website not to use the 460sw. They recommend the 450bm. I have eventually found success in loading the 460 with H4198, and also 454 Casull loads. Both are finally acceptable to my standards.

I had planned on building a 45Raptor which is a 460 case with the rim turned off so it fits a standard bolt face but ended up buying the Ruger. There bring out a fancier model with a 22" barrel all cerokoted in burnt bronze looks sharp. since I got my big SS check I also bought a CVA Scout V2 in a 45/70 with the 25" barrel interested in getting that one up to speed always liked the 45/70 I have had several over the years.
Does your 460SW have a brake on the barrel? All the videos I saw of people shooting that in a TC said it was really bad on recoil that maybe part of the accuracy problem.

I have been playing with a scout v2 in 45-70. 51.8 gr of H4198 in starline brass with federal large rifle primers and a hornady 250 mono get me 2380 fps. Under 1/2 inch groups at 100 yds. Shot a 3/4 inch group at 200 yds with 7 inch drop at 200. I had a crossfire II scope on it for 28 shots before it died on me. I need a tougher scope.

I also bought one . I have only shot the Hornady factory 325gr ammo so far very accurate right out of the box. I like the gun a lot but it is quite a bit heavier than the Ruger. But when you shoot heavy loads in the 45/70 the extra weight is important.

Seeing some pretty cheap prices on this model......starting to see the 22 inch camo model show up. what advantages would the extra 6 inch of barrel give a guy?

I am not sure how much velocity gain you will get with the 22" barrel especially with factory loads. But with hand loads I do believe 2500 fps is real doable in a 22" barrel especially if you use the Barnes 250gr bullets they are a little smaller in diameter and that lets you seat the bullet out another .200 which will increase room for more powder. I have been waiting for the new Ruger with the cero coated bronze finish and camo stock. I have my 450BM sold once the new model comes out the carbine is really nice but I always like a longer barrel. The 45/70 with the 25" barrel turns up good velocity so would the 450BM in the CVA with a 25" barrel.

Sorry, forgot about this thread. Yeah, I had it threaded and tried several brake designs. None worked very good. I talked to JD Jones, and he said the fast burning powder in a long barrel doesnt have enough gas volume to make the brake effective. I ended up having a thread protector made, then port the barrel itself. It worked the best to at least keep the muzzle rise down. As said, using H4198 in 460 brass or 454 casull loads has been the ticket for me.

Although I rarely shoot my .450, its a dandy little cartridge. Accurate too. I did harvest one buck with it, and the 250gr FTX hammered him at about 70yds. I decided to put a Timney I had laying around on it, but found it wanted to bind. After inspection and a few seconds with an exacto knife, the problem was eliminated. Took it out the other day to verify it and it was bitter cold with the winds. They were 16mph, gusting to 26mph and coming right off Lake Huron. I sent 10 rounds and the trigger problem was no more. This little rifle is pretty accurate at range too.... Not the same day as the above target.

Great targets and very typical of the 450 bushmaster. I really like mine If I don't sell it to my buddy I will probably put a new Timney trigger in it. I have been playing with my 45/70 in the CVA Scout V2 It shoots really good with both the Hornady 325gr and the Barnes 300gr original's. If I build a custom bolt action it will be a 45 raptor mainly because of the 1.800 case and the fact that I can throat it out to what ever length I want should be a real killer.

I only tested the short barrel on the Ruger. I would think you should get a velocity gain. But when your using really fast pistol powders it might not turn up much more over a 16" barrel. You can get a very easy 2400fps out of the 16" barrel with heavier powder charges of H110. No problem in a bolt action Ruger it might be in a CVA but my CVA is handling some pretty heavy charges of H4198 with the 300 gr and 325 gr bullets. The CVA Scout V2 would have a 25" barrel and muzzle brake that should produce the most velocity.

That sounds about right. If you hunt out of a tree stand I would go with the shorter barrel. It handles really fast and like I said if you reload you can easily drive a 250gr bullet to 2400 fps. which is a real big jump in performance. Now if you hunt in a area were you watch fields and shoot out to 300 yards then I would go with the longer barrel it might be a little steadier to hold either way it should make a excellent deer gun.
I looked at that report when I first started checking velocity I had a spread of about 100fps for me that was terrible most of the Hornady ammo I did check was well within 50 fps. still not what I was looking for. I played around with sizing the bullet down a little so I could seat the bullet out further to get more powder in the case that go my velocity up but it didn't make the deviation any better. So I went back to seating the bullet to its recommended depth and loaded 46.0 grs of H110 that is a compressed load which is what this 450 case really liked the velocity went up over 2400fps and the deviation went down to 20fps and accuracy was outstanding. I still find the 45/70 to be a better choice more bullets and a 300gr. Barnes original spritzer and 2450fps is a excellent combo out 300 plus yards.
